Student answer (Band 5.0)

The line chart compares the amount of carbon dioxide emitted per personin four different countries from 1967 to 2007.

it is clear that the production of carbon dioxide increased in Italy and Portugal during the period from 1967 to 2007. In contrast, the United Kingdom and Sweden saw a decline in carbon emission over the 40 years.

The other two average carbon emission in Italy and Portugal steadily grow above 5% and nearly 8% in 2007 both countries. In 1977 the most moderate level of Sweden which peaked at 11% of carbon emission. However , the United kingdom shraply dropped at 9% in 2007 which is most effective to compare the other country emission .

From the chart ,we can say that Portugal and Italy are the most valueable emission by the end of the year. This two country amount are slightly increased emission of carbon dixioid.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify the overall contrast correctly: emissions rose in Italy and Portugal, while the UK and Sweden declined over the full period. You also note Sweden’s peak in 1977 and the UK’s high level at the end. However, the report only partially covers the main features: it does not clearly compare the countries’ starting and ending positions, and the claim that Italy and Portugal were the “most valuable” emitters is unclear and inaccurate, since the UK remained highest in 2007. Several figures are also misrepresented: the UK fell to about 8.7 tonnes, not 9% in a meaningful percentage comparison, and Italy levelled off at about 7.6 tonnes. The response is 147 words, below the 150-word minimum. Add a clearer overview and accurate comparisons.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a basic paragraph structure, moving from an introduction to an overview and then to details and a concluding statement. Linking expressions such as “In contrast” and “However” show an attempt to connect ideas. Nevertheless, the progression is not consistently clear: the third paragraph begins with “The other two average carbon emission,” which makes its relationship to the previous paragraph difficult to follow, and the final paragraph repeats the idea that Italy and Portugal increased. Some connections are also inaccurate or confusing, particularly “However” before the UK’s decline, which does not clearly contrast with the preceding point. Organise the body by comparing the two rising countries with the two declining countries, and use references and transitions that make each comparison explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “line chart,” “carbon dioxide,” “emission,” “decline,” and “peaked,” so the reader can recognise the subject and some key trends. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations make the meaning unclear. “Production of carbon dioxide” is less suitable than describing emissions, while “most valuable emission” does not express a clear comparison. “Most effective to compare” and “moderate level” are also inappropriate in this context. There are noticeable spelling and form errors, including “shraply,” “dixioid,” and “valuable.” Build a more precise set of chart-reporting phrases, such as “stood at,” “rose steadily,” “fell gradually,” and “remained stable,” and check spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You produce some complete sentences and attempt a range of structures, including the contrast in “In contrast, the United Kingdom and Sweden saw a decline.” However, the range is limited, and errors occur frequently enough to make several sentences difficult to interpret. For example, “The other two average carbon emission … steadily grow” has an unclear subject and incorrect verb form, while “This two country amount are” contains problems with number agreement and sentence structure. Capitalisation and punctuation are also inconsistent, as in the lowercase “it” at the start of a sentence and the spacing around commas. Practise forming clear subject–verb sentences and use past-tense verbs consistently when describing the historical data.
