Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You address both views and give a personal position, agreeing that foreign languages are useful for travel and for other purposes. The story about your friend travelling to Italy is relevant support for the travel argument, and you explain the practical difficulty he faced. However, the second view is only briefly mentioned: “for information or other purpose” is not explained with a specific reason or example. Your own opinion is also repeated rather than developed, and the conclusion does not clarify what other purposes you consider important. This makes the response only partially developed. To strengthen it, explain one non-travel benefit—such as accessing books, studying another culture, or communicating with more people—and connect it clearly to your position.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some organisation: the response moves from the travel-related view to a personal example, then introduces the opposing view and your opinion. The Italy anecdote gives the first part a recognisable focus. However, progression is not consistently clear, and several ideas run together in long stretches without effective sentence or paragraph boundaries. Linking phrases such as “on the other hand” and “but in my opinion” help signal shifts, but they are used mechanically and do not make the relationship between ideas fully clear. References such as “they” in “they said we should learn” are also vague. Use separate paragraphs for each view and your conclusion, and connect each example directly to the point it supports.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
You use a small set of relevant words, including “foreign language,” “culture,” “masters,” and “difficulties,” and the travel story communicates its general meaning. However, vocabulary is limited and repetitive, with “foreign language” and “learn” appearing frequently. Several spelling errors, including “convenent,” “peopel,” “trav al,” and “perpuse,” make the text harder to read, while phrases such as “for informative purpose” are unclear or unnatural. These issues sometimes make the reader work to understand your meaning. Build a more accurate range of topic vocabulary and check spelling carefully. For example, you could use “communicate with local people,” “access information,” and “broaden cultural understanding” to express your ideas more precisely.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response relies mainly on simple clauses, with attempts to connect ideas using “when,” “if,” and “but.” These attempts show some effort to form longer sentences, but they are often faulty, and frequent errors can make meaning difficult to follow. For example, “when go in a foreign country we need” lacks a subject and a correctly formed verb, while “he did not know how tell the taxi driver where he want to go” has problems with infinitive structure and tense agreement. Articles, verb forms, and sentence boundaries are also often missing or inaccurate. Practise building complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, then check past-tense consistency in the anecdote and use punctuation to separate complete ideas.
