Student answer (Band 5.5)

It is often argued that some believe travelling or working abroad is the only reason for learning another language, while others argue that there are so many logics to learn this. In this essay discuss both views but I contend that there are many causes exist why people learn foreign language such as to achieve higher degree and personal interests.

The main reason for grasping another language is tour or working purpose. Tourists have to know the language of this country which he would visit because it is the main way of communications. Moreover, businessman also prefer to acquire knowledge on linguistic expression for same reason. For example, if a businessman could not communicate with his partners properly, others may gain shares and more profit easily. As a result, he faces challenges, lose and cannot get profit smoothly. So that a group of people believe that individuals learn foreign language to meet up these purposes.

Other logics to learn linguistic expression beside his native language are admitting higher degree in international institutions and someone does only to meet up personal interest. One important criterion to get chance in international school is grasping their language. For instance, if a student wanted to admit in his favorite institution, he must be good score in language proficiency examination like IELTS, TOFEL, PTE. Furthermore, he can easily communicate with his classmates, teachers resulting in get a good score invariably and eventually he gets good job in popular company or organizations.

In conclusions, individuals want to gain knowledge on international language not only for working or travelling but also, they are more interested to get chance in his preferred institutions. So, I believe that people want to learn another language for many reasons rather than mentioned two.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address both views and state your position: the introduction says there are reasons beyond travel and work, and the conclusion repeats this view. The paragraph on travel and business gives a relevant explanation of why communication matters, while the education example supports your alternative reasons. However, the discussion is uneven and some ideas remain unclear or insufficiently developed. The claim that language ability helps someone gain admission is relevant, but the later link to getting a good score and a job is not fully explained. Personal interest is mentioned in the introduction and body, but no example or explanation is provided. Develop each reason with a clearer explanation and a specific supporting example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable essay structure, with an introduction, separate body paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion. This helps the reader follow the broad direction of the argument. You also use linking expressions such as “Moreover,” “For example,” and “As a result.” However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes difficult to follow: the business example moves from communication problems to competitors gaining profit, then to the writer’s loss without clearly connecting these points. Some transitions are mechanical, and references such as “this” and “he” do not always make the intended meaning clear. Organise each body paragraph around one main reason, then explain and illustrate it in a logical sequence, using more precise references.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You attempt vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “acquire knowledge,” “language proficiency examination,” and “international institutions,” and the reader can generally identify your intended meaning. However, the range is limited by repeated or unnatural expressions, and several word choices make ideas harder to understand. For example, “logics” is not a natural substitute for “reasons,” “tour” does not express the idea of travelling, and “linguistic expression” is an awkward way to refer to a foreign language. “Admitting higher degree” also does not convey the intended educational goal clearly. Aim for accurate, natural collocations rather than more formal-sounding phrases, and check spelling of test names such as TOEFL.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including clauses introduced by “because,” “if,” and “while.” These attempts show some range, but complex structures are often faulty, and errors recur across the response. Examples include “In this essay discuss both views,” which lacks a subject, “there are many causes exist,” which combines incompatible structures, and “a student wanted to admit,” where the verb pattern is incorrect. Agreement and pronoun forms are also inconsistent, as in “businessman … his” and “individuals … his.” Articles, plurals, and sentence boundaries need attention as well. Practise building accurate sentences with one clear main clause, then add subordinate clauses only when their grammar is secure.
