Some people say that the only reason for learning a foreign language is in order to travel to or work in a foreign country. Others say that these are not the only reasons why someone should learn a foreign language.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
WHEN THE TOPIC IS DISCUSSED, THERE ARE DIVIDED OPINIONS. SOME ARE OF THE OPINION THAT MANY PEOPLE THINK THAT THE ONLY REASON FOR LEARNING A FOREIGN LANGUAGE IS IN ORDER TO TRAVEL TO OR WORK IN A FOREIGN COUNTRY, WHILE A FEW OTHERS ARGUE THAT THESE ARE NOT THE ONLY FACTORS WHY SOMEBODY LEARNS A DIFFERENT LANGUAGE. MEANWHILE, NOT ONLY BOTH VIEWS BUT ALSO MY OPINION WILL BE EXPLAINED IN THE ENSUING PARAGRAPHS, ALONG WITH EXAMPLES.
EXAMINING THE FORMER OPINION, THE FOREMOST ARGUMENT THE SUPPORTERS WOULD PUT FORWARD IS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE WORKS AS A BRIDGE BETWEEN TWO PEOPLE. ONE PROMINENT EXAMPLE IS THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE. ENGLISH POPULARITY IS MORE THAN THAT OF ANY OTHER LANGUAGE ACROSS THE WORLD. ENGLISH PLAYS A CRUCIAL ROLE IN COMMUNICATION BETWEEN TWO DIFFERENT LANGUAGE SPEAKERS. TO JUSTIFY IT FURTHER, MANY MULTINATIONAL COMPANIES AND INSTITUTIONS ACCEPT ENGLISH AS A PROFESSIONAL AND COMMON WAY TO COMMUNICATION. FOR EXAMPLE, MANY UNIVERSITIES RUN THEIR COURSES IN ENGLISH BECAUSE STUDENTS CAN LEARN ENGLISH EASILY AND STUDENTS CAN ENROL ON THE COURSE FROM ANY PLACE. COUNTRIES LIKE GERMANY, FRANCE AND ITALY USE ENGLISH AS A FORMAL LANGUAGE FOR EDUCATION.
HOWEVER, MANY OTHER PEOPLE SAY THAT A FOREIGN LANGUAGE SHOULD BE LEARNED TO UNDERSTAND THE CULTURE. ALSO, THE LANGUAGE CONNECTS THE PEOPLE EMOTIONALLY.
IN CONCLUSION, IN THIS CONTEMPORARY ERA, THERE IS EQUAL EVIDENCE TO SUPPORT THE ARGUMENT I HAVE PROVIDED. HENCE, IN MY OPINION LEARNING A FOREIGN LANGUAGE IS NOT THE ONLY PURPOSE.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, which negatively impacts the development of ideas. While the prompt asks to discuss both views and provide an opinion, the second view is addressed very briefly in only two sentences, lacking the necessary depth and supporting examples required for a higher band. The introduction is somewhat repetitive, and the conclusion is underdeveloped. To improve, you must ensure each viewpoint is explored with specific, extended examples and that your own opinion is clearly integrated throughout the essay rather than just stated at the end. The current lack of length prevents a full exploration of the topic.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is organized into paragraphs, which is a positive step. However, the progression of ideas is limited by the brevity of the content. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Examining the former opinion' and 'In conclusion', but some transitions feel mechanical or slightly awkward, such as the opening sentence structure. The referencing is generally clear, but the logical flow between the body paragraphs is weak because the second viewpoint is not given sufficient space to be properly contrasted with the first. Improving the use of linking words to connect ideas within and between paragraphs would enhance the overall coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks the range and precision expected at higher bands. You rely on somewhat repetitive phrasing, such as 'foreign language' and 'English'. There are some attempts at more sophisticated vocabulary, but they are limited. To reach a higher band, you should aim to incorporate more topic-specific collocations and less common lexical items. For example, instead of repeating 'English popularity', you could use 'the global prevalence of English'. The current vocabulary is sufficient to convey meaning but does not demonstrate the flexibility or precision required for a band 7 or above.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While there are some error-free sentences, there are also noticeable grammatical issues, such as 'way to communication' (should be 'way of communicating') and 'not only both views but also my opinion will be explained' (which is logically awkward). Punctuation is generally functional, but the sentence variety is limited. To improve, focus on using a wider range of complex structures, such as conditional sentences or relative clauses, and ensure that your verb forms and prepositions are used accurately. The errors present do not generally impede communication, but they are frequent enough to limit the score.
