Student answer (Band 6.5)

Some people assume that the a person should only learn any foreign language if they are planning to work in a country where that language is spoken. However, some people beleive there are many valid reasons to learn a foreign language other than emloyment. This essay will examine both perspectives and will argue why one should learn foreign language even when they have no plan to work in that country or region.

In old times people's have limited interaction across the countries. The main reasons of travelling foreign countries was either employment or tourism and there was limited or no exposure to foreign culture and civilization until you travel there for some reason. This had given an impression to many people in past that learning foreign languages is not required and futile until you moving there for work.

In today's time globalization have connected people more than ever. Social media and increased access to internet have exposed people to various cultures and civilizations. People are taking interest in foreign literature, music, movies , dramas as well as international politics. Even though language barrier sometimes limit people sharing of resources across the countries or regions. For example, science student in Pakistan may not be able to understand a lecture in German language by a famous German scientist just because of language barrier.Similary, peopleay like compositions of a famous Korean singer but they may be able to understand the lyrics of his songs. Learning different foreign language increased people reach to that country's culture, literature , music and educational resources. Many foreign universities required international students to prove language proficiency by passing standardized language tests. Even though many reputed schools have included foreign languages like chineses and French in their curriculum. Hence, learning foreign languages strengthens personal development of a person by opening many opportunities in various directions.

Therefore, in my opinion learning foreign languages is crucial for many reasons and must be taken as an emerging need to deal with uncontrollable globalization in all sectors of life.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the mention of globalization and access to educational resources. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat uneven. For instance, the argument regarding the 'science student in Pakistan' is a good example, but the explanation of why language learning is an 'emerging need' remains slightly underdeveloped. The position is consistent throughout, and the essay maintains a clear focus on the topic, meeting the requirements for a Band 6.5, which rounds to a 6.0 for this criterion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two viewpoints. Cohesive devices such as 'However', 'For example', and 'Therefore' are used to link ideas, though some transitions feel a bit mechanical or repetitive. Referencing is generally clear, although there are minor issues with sentence-level flow, such as the abrupt transition between the example of the Korean singer and the subsequent point about university requirements. Overall, the progression of ideas is coherent.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task. The student uses some topic-specific terms like 'globalization', 'language proficiency', and 'standardized language tests'. However, there are several spelling errors ('beleive', 'emloyment', 'chineses', 'peopleay') and some awkward word choices, such as 'In old times' instead of 'In the past'. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey meaning, the errors and the lack of more sophisticated, precise collocations prevent the essay from reaching a higher band. The range is sufficient for a Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement ('people's have limited interaction', 'globalization have connected') and article usage ('the a person', 'the language barrier'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with missing spaces after commas and periods. While these errors do not significantly impede communication, they are frequent enough to be noticeable throughout the text. The student shows an attempt at complex structures, but the control over these is inconsistent.
