Student answer (Band 6.5)
While many advocate that people learn a foreign language only to travel or ensure work in a foreign country, others argue that there are several other reasons behind this notion, and this essay will explore both viewpoints before arguing that there can be other ideas to learn a foreign language.
Proponents of this viewpoint argue that people learn a foreign language only to travel or ensure work in a foreign country. This perspective is based on their assumption that individuals learn a new language when they want to visit or work in the place where they are supposed to go. It is true to some extent because people are busy in their lives and are unable to learn a new language unless they have to visit that place. For instance, a person wants to set up a business in a foreign country has to adapt their language and will start learning that language.
On the other hand, many people contend that there are several reasons behind adapting a foreign language. This is beneficial because learning a foreign language can become a source of income by working under sectors where a foreign language is known. For instance, a person residing at India masters his English speaking skills would be able to earn money by guiding tourists from another country effectively. Consequently, it will lead to development for individuals and society as a whole.
Personally, I am firmly convinced that it is not necessary to adapt a language while visiting that country. This viewpoint is more convincing for several reasons . The most compelling reason is that it can lead to development of society .
In conclusion, although some people believe that the purpose behind learning a new language is travelling and working, others argue that there are several different reasons behind it. After considering both perspectives, I remain convinced that learning a foreign language can be beneficial in several ways.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The essay addresses both viewpoints and provides a personal opinion, meeting the basic requirements of the prompt. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. The argument for the second viewpoint is brief, and the personal opinion section lacks depth, merely stating that language learning leads to 'development of society' without explaining how or why. To reach a higher band, you should provide more specific examples or logical explanations for your claims. The conclusion is also quite repetitive and does not effectively synthesize the arguments presented in the body paragraphs.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. You use some cohesive devices such as 'For instance,' 'On the other hand,' and 'Consequently.' However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and the logical progression within paragraphs could be smoother. For example, the transition from the second paragraph to the third feels abrupt. Additionally, some referencing is slightly unclear, such as the phrase 'this viewpoint' in the fourth paragraph, which could be more explicitly linked to the preceding argument.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'proponents,' 'contend,' and 'residing.' However, there are some issues with word choice and collocation. For instance, you use 'adapting a foreign language' instead of 'acquiring' or 'learning' a language. Similarly, 'ensure work' is not a standard collocation in this context. While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the essay from reaching a higher band. Expanding your vocabulary to include more precise academic collocations would be beneficial.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'a person wants to set up a business... has to adapt,' which is missing a relative pronoun (e.g., 'a person who wants...'). Another error is 'residing at India,' which should be 'residing in India.' While these errors are frequent, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your meaning. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of prepositions and relative clauses.
