Student answer (Band 7.0)
Some individuals say that the sole reason for learning a foreign language is in order to visit other nations for vacations or work. Others argue that these are not the only causes why someone should learn a foreign tongue. In my opinion, while being fluent in a foreign language is advantageous because it simplifies travel and work abroad, but it also has numerous other benefits that will be discussed in this essay.
First of all, the charm that comes with knowing a foreign language is undeniable. Not only does this skill show how intelligent a person is but also provides an idea about how consistent they are because learning a language is not a short-term process. Having such knowledge is helpful during work and travel abroad because it reduces any scope of miscommunication and misunderstandings; hence, granting opportunities that would otherwise not be available. Furthermore, it is vital to understand the native language of the country one choses to live in, as without it, a person is unable to decipher the rules and the laws of the nation.
In addition, a new research has uncovered that the children who are bilingual have more neurons that are linked to learning pathways than the kids who are monolingual. Hence, tasks like memorizing, remembering come naturally to these youngsters and they carry these traits to adulthood.
In conclusion, learning languages has more benefits than just being able to travel and work in a foreign country. Being able to read, write, understand, and speak an additional tongue does wonders for a person's intelligence.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses both views presented in the prompt and provides a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, particularly the discussion on cognitive benefits and social integration. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the point about 'intelligence' and 'consistency' in the second paragraph is asserted but not fully explored with concrete examples. The third paragraph introduces research on bilingualism, which is a strong point, but it could have been linked more explicitly to the broader argument about why language learning is valuable beyond travel and work. Overall, the response covers all parts of the task well, though further elaboration would elevate the score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'First of all', 'Furthermore', 'In addition', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to guide the reader through the argument. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. However, there are minor issues with flow; for example, the transition between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother. The referencing is generally clear, and the progression of ideas is logical throughout the text. The use of cohesive devices is sufficient, though not always sophisticated.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is generally appropriate for the task and allows for clear communication. You use some good collocations like 'sole reason', 'undeniable', and 'miscommunication'. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'a new research' (research is uncountable) and 'choses' (spelling error for 'chooses'). While you attempt to use more advanced vocabulary, the range is somewhat limited and could be expanded to include more precise academic terminology. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, but it does not consistently demonstrate the flexibility or precision required for a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as the redundant 'but' in the introduction ('while... but'), and the article error in 'a new research'. Additionally, the sentence 'Not only does this skill show how intelligent a person is but also provides...' is slightly awkward in its structure. While these errors are present, they do not impede communication. To improve, focus on ensuring that complex structures like 'not only... but also' are used with consistent parallel grammatical forms and pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and article usage.
