Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some people say that the only reason for learning the foreign language is in order to travel or work in a foreign country .At the same time ,there are some other people who say that these are not the only reasons why someone should learn a foreign language .

There are about 206 countries in the world if I am not wrong .All the countries have there own languages to speak and communicate with each other .The world is a Global Village now . One has to travel to other countries also ,to seek some job and have a good life . Some other people are the travelers who travel to different countries for enjoyment and for the sake of knowledge and study purposes .

These are the main reasons why people travel the world and live in the different countries and speak different languages .People need to learn the languages of other countries to communicate with the people and make them understand each other .I want to put an example from real life .Let suppose, someone is moving from one country to another country ,he must know the language of the country he is moving in . It will definitely help the people while in discussion with the people of the other country .

Communication is an art in which one must know the different languages of the different countries .This is an essential element in dealing with the unkown people of the other countries. Language learning is necessary for the people who are intended to move to other country or they want to travel the different countries of the world .

To put the thread of my discussion in a nutshell ,some people say the only reason for learning a foreign language is in order to travel to or work in a foreign country. Others say that these are not the only reasons why someone should learn a foreign language .Both have there own opinions but learning a foreign language is an art .

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by discussing the reasons for learning a language, but it fails to fully explore the second perspective mentioned in the prompt: that there are other reasons beyond travel and work. The essay focuses almost exclusively on the necessity of language for travel and employment, neglecting to discuss cognitive benefits, cultural appreciation, or personal growth. Consequently, the position is not clearly developed or sustained throughout the essay. The conclusion merely repeats the prompt rather than synthesising the arguments or providing a clear personal opinion as requested by the task instructions.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the logical progression is weak. While there is an attempt to use cohesive devices, they are often used mechanically or inappropriately, such as 'Let suppose' or 'To put the thread of my discussion in a nutshell'. The referencing is sometimes unclear, and the transition between ideas feels disjointed. The ideas within paragraphs do not always flow logically, making the overall structure feel somewhat repetitive rather than building a coherent argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. There is significant repetition of basic phrases like 'different countries' and 'foreign language'. Some word choices are unnatural, such as 'put the thread of my discussion' or 'unkown people'. While the meaning is generally clear, the lack of variety and the reliance on simple, repetitive language limits the score. There are also minor spelling and punctuation errors throughout the text.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay relies heavily on simple sentence structures. While there are attempts at complex sentences, they are often marred by grammatical errors, such as 'there own languages' (should be 'their') and 'the country he is moving in' (should be 'to'). Punctuation is frequently incorrect, particularly with spacing around commas and periods. These errors are frequent and occasionally cause the reader some difficulty, though the overall meaning remains understandable. A greater variety of error-free complex structures is needed to move into the higher bands.
