Student answer (Band 6.5)

Unquestionably, every coin has two sides and so are the people. While some of the population believes that work and travel are the only two reasons to learn a foreign language while others debate that there are other reasons also. This essay will compare and contrast both of the opinions along with my opinion which is in the favor of former view will be discussed in a sensible conclusion.

Initiating with the points supporting first school of thought, the first benefit is to get better work opportunities in foreign countries and also in the multinational corporations. For example the people who support this say that being able to understand foreign language such as French helps the youth to secure better opportunities at high paying MNCs in there own or overseas countries. Secondly, it makes the trips easy and well manageable. To elaborate the fact it is often seen that people who know the local language can enjoy, communicate, understand the culture and the tradition very well that the people who do not. As a result the the amount of mishaps that can occur in a trip due to lack of communication can be significantly reduced.

On its contrasting side, people who held another view point say that individuals should learn foreign as it will help them to read foreign articles, books and also help them to understand their artwork also which will allow them, to indulge in their tradition and culture.

To conclude, although there are few facts in the favor of the latter point such as reading foreign books and understanding their art work yet according to me the merits of the former point outweighs them. However it will depend upon the minds of the people that which view they are in favor of.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both views and provides an opinion, but the development is uneven. While the first view (work and travel) is supported with two distinct points, the second view (intellectual/cultural benefits) is significantly under-developed, consisting of only one brief paragraph. Furthermore, the conclusion contradicts the introduction; the introduction states the author favors the 'former view' (work/travel), but the conclusion also claims the 'former point' outweighs the latter, yet the essay lacks a robust argument to justify this preference. To reach a higher band, you must provide balanced development for both sides and ensure your opinion is clearly supported by your arguments throughout the essay.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay uses basic cohesive devices such as 'Initiating with', 'Secondly', and 'To conclude' to signal structure. However, the progression of ideas is somewhat mechanical. Paragraphing is present, but the third paragraph is very short, which disrupts the flow of the argument. Referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the phrase 'the people who do not', where the antecedent is missing. While the overall arrangement is logical, the lack of sophisticated linking words and the imbalance in paragraph length prevent a higher score. Improving the transition between sentences and ensuring each paragraph has a similar weight would enhance coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. You use some relevant terms like 'multinational corporations' and 'mishaps', but there is also repetitive phrasing, such as 'foreign language' and 'people'. Some word choices are slightly unnatural, such as 'well manageable' or 'the amount of mishaps that can occur'. There are also minor errors in collocation, such as 'in the favor of'. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of synonyms and more precise collocations to express your ideas with greater sophistication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that, while not impeding communication, are noticeable. Examples include 'in there own' (should be 'their'), 'the the amount' (repetition), and 'people who held another view point' (tense inconsistency). Additionally, there are punctuation issues, such as missing commas in complex sentences. The range of structures is limited, and the errors occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement, correct pronoun usage, and proofreading for minor slips will help improve your accuracy.
