Student answer (Band 6.5)

Some people think that the only reason for learning a foreign language is to travel to or work in a foreign country, While others believe that these are not only reasons why someone should learn a foreign language. this essay will outline not only the both perspectives but also my opinion which is in favour of latter point of view in forthcoming fragments with logical conclusion.

On the one hand, learning a foreign language is an afeactive way to travel or work in a foreign country. It helps people immerse themselves in a different culture and gain a deeper understanding of the place where they live or work. For example, without learning french, it would be much harder to communicate with local people pr learn about the history behind ancient architecture in France. In addition, when people want to explore local culture in more depth , they usually need to talk to native speakers. Those who were born and raised in the city can provide insights that go far beyond what history textbooks offer. This means that learning a foreign greatly enhance the cultural understanding and practical communication when living or working abroad.

One the other hand, Learning a foreign language is not only useful for travel and work. one major reason is education and academic purposes. English, For example, is one of the most widely used languages in the world and in many Asian countries such a Tiwan and japan. it is commonly studied for examinations. achiving a high score in English can enhance the overall score of there results and also a basic requirement for applying to universities or overseas programs. Furthermore, learning English can enhance brain development in different aspects of thinking and improve cognitive skills. This means that foreign languages play an important role in education and personal development, rather than serving only practical needs like travel or employment.

In conclusion, although some people think that the only reason for learning a foreign language is to travel to or work in foreign country. in my opinion its also a important for there daily routine and there academic purposes.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the cultural benefits of language learning for travel and the cognitive/academic advantages for personal development. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited; for instance, the point about brain development is mentioned but not fully explored. The position is consistent throughout the essay, though the introduction is slightly repetitive in its phrasing. To reach a higher band, ensure that each supporting point is expanded with more depth and specific examples.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a central theme. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'On the one hand,' 'In addition,' and 'Furthermore,' which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are mechanical, and there are issues with sentence-level cohesion, such as the fragmented structure in the introduction and the run-on sentences in the conclusion. Referencing is occasionally unclear, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring consistent punctuation would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the student to express ideas clearly. There are attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'immerse,' 'cognitive skills,' and 'native speakers.' However, there are several spelling errors ('afeactive' for effective, 'french' instead of French, 'Tiwan' for Taiwan, 'achiving' for achieving) and some awkward word choices ('forthcoming fragments'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more careful proofreading and a wider range of precise, academic vocabulary to move into the higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the student attempts complex sentences, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation, such as missing capital letters at the start of sentences ('this essay,' 'it is commonly'), incorrect verb forms, and subject-verb agreement issues ('learning a foreign greatly enhance'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma usage. These errors are noticeable and occur throughout the text, though they rarely prevent the reader from understanding the intended meaning. More attention to basic grammatical accuracy and sentence boundaries is required.
