Student answer (Band 6.5)

In today's globalised world, more people are choosing to learn a new language for personal and professional reasons. Some believe that language learning is only useful for travel or career purposes, while others believe additional reasons exist. This essay will discuss both views before presenting my own opinion, which favours the latter.

To begin with, it is true that knowing a local language makes travel much easier. Simple tasks like asking for directions or ordering food become difficult without it, since many local people do not speak English fluently. For example, a tourist in a rural place may struggle to order a meal without speaking a particular language, even with a translation app.

However, in my opinion, there are more significant reasons to learn a language. Firstly, it improves mental abilities such as multitasking, as the brain constantly switches between two sets of vocabulary and grammar. Secondly, it gives access to a country's literature , helping a person understand that culture more deeply. Finally, it brings personal achievement and confidence unrelated to career or travel. For example, many retired people learn languages like French simply to stay mentally active. Learning new languages implemented in your own hobby work will really take individual to next

In conclusion, learning a local language undeniably helps with travel and daily communication abroad while it also helps improving cognitive, cultural, and personal benefits pursuit for anyone. Every individuals should acquire a knowledge of knowing new languages.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The essay addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal position. However, the response is under the 250-word minimum, which limits the depth of development. The final sentence of the second body paragraph is incomplete ('take individual to next'), and the conclusion is somewhat rushed. While the ideas are relevant, they could be more fully extended with more detailed examples to meet the requirements of a higher band. The failure to meet the minimum word count is a significant constraint on the overall task achievement.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organised with clear paragraphing. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'However', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to guide the reader through the argument. The progression of ideas is generally clear, although the abrupt ending of the second body paragraph disrupts the flow. Referencing is mostly accurate, and the essay maintains a consistent focus on the prompt throughout.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task. You use some good collocations like 'globalised world', 'mentally active', and 'personal achievement'. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'learning new languages implemented in your own hobby work', which is slightly awkward. To improve, try to incorporate more precise academic vocabulary and avoid repetitive phrasing. The range is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, but lacks the sophistication required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'helps improving' (should be 'helps to improve' or 'helps improve') and 'Every individuals' (should be 'Every individual'). The sentence fragment at the end of the second paragraph significantly impacts the grammatical accuracy. While these errors do not generally impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score.
