Student answer (Band 6.5)

It is commonly believed that traveling and business in abroad are the main reasons to learn foreign languages. While others argue that these are not the only reasons to learn new languages.

Firstly, languages are an integral part of communication. Foreign language can help a traveler to interact with locals communities . Moreover, it helps to learn about the culture of that country more thoroughly and precisely. You can also do negotiation during shopping. Secondly, knowing a second language also helps you in your professional career. You can communicate with fellow workers without any language barrier which results in high productivity .You can learn new skills from foreign a tutor. If you are bilingual. You can avail more opportunities as compare to monolingual . For instance, my friend works in fashion industry. He used to buy shoes from the local whole sellers but it costs him very expensive. Gradually , he learned Chinese language . He found Chinese supplier and did a Zoom meeting with him. So he started to import products directly from him which cost him less than before.

Work and travel are not the major reason to learn different languages. Many people learn other languages to socialize with other nationalities. They learn language of a specific country and find friends from that nation. In this way they can learn about lifestyles of that country' nationals. Some Students learn language to study in a particular country. For instance, many students from Pakistan learn the German language to study in the Germany.

I conclude that work and travel are the reasons but also there are many other reason to learn foreign languages .

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a personal opinion, fulfilling the main requirements of the prompt. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. While the example regarding the friend in the fashion industry is detailed, other points, such as the social benefits of language learning, are less developed. The introduction is slightly weak, as the second sentence is a fragment rather than a full statement of the opposing view. To reach a higher band, ensure that all arguments are fully extended with clear, logical explanations and that the position is consistently maintained throughout the essay.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Moreover', and 'For instance' are used to guide the reader. However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical, and there are issues with sentence-level cohesion, such as the fragmented sentence in the introduction and the abrupt transition between ideas. Referencing is generally clear, but the flow between sentences could be smoother to improve the overall progression of the argument. Paragraphing is present, but the concluding paragraph is quite brief and lacks a strong summary of the main points.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their meaning clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'integral', 'bilingual', and 'monolingual'. However, there are several collocation errors and awkward phrasings, such as 'business in abroad', 'local whole sellers', and 'it costs him very expensive'. These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision of the writing. To improve, focus on learning common collocations and ensuring that words are used in their correct grammatical context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, including issues with articles ('the German language', 'the Germany'), subject-verb agreement, and sentence fragments ('If you are bilingual.'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with unnecessary spaces before periods and commas. While the writer attempts complex structures, these are often where the errors occur. The majority of sentences contain minor errors, which prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. Focusing on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy would significantly improve the score.
