Student answer (Band 6.5)

In today's world, learning a foreign language has become an important issue. While some people believe that the only reason for learning a foreign language is to travel to or work in a foreign country, others believe that these are not the only reasons why someone should learn a foreign language. This essay will discuss both views before explaining why I support the second view.

On the one hand, people support learning a foreign language for travelling or working abroad because it helps people communicate easily in another country. This is because better communication reduces language barriers, which leads to greater confidence and better opportunities. Not only does this approach improve communication skills, but it also increases employment opportunities, making it a practical choice.

On the other hand, many people prefer learning a foreign language for other purposes because it supports education and personal development. Although this view seems reasonable, I find it less convincing because learning a foreign language offers benefits beyond travelling and working abroad. If governments and individuals work together, language learning can be achieved more effectively. Only through such efforts can lasting progress be made. Therefore, I support the second view because, from my perspective, it's hence growing to help the people for learn a f

In conclusion, both views have their own advantages. However, I believe learning a foreign language for different purposes because it not only improves communication skills but also supports personal development. Although some challenges may arise, they can be addressed through proper planning.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both views and provides a clear position. However, the development of ideas is limited. While the first body paragraph explains the benefits of language for travel and work, the second body paragraph is underdeveloped and ends abruptly with an incomplete sentence ('...for learn a f'). The argument regarding personal development is mentioned but not sufficiently supported with examples or detailed reasoning. The conclusion attempts to summarize the position but lacks the depth required for a higher band. To improve, ensure that each body paragraph contains a fully developed argument with specific examples, and avoid incomplete sentences that leave ideas hanging.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear introduction and conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand,' 'On the other hand,' and 'However' are used to signal shifts in the argument. However, the flow is disrupted by the incomplete sentence at the end of the second paragraph, which negatively impacts the overall coherence. Additionally, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. To improve, focus on ensuring that each sentence is complete and that ideas within paragraphs are linked more fluidly to create a stronger sense of progression.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task, covering common topics related to language learning and employment. Phrases like 'language barriers,' 'employment opportunities,' and 'personal development' are appropriate. However, the range is somewhat limited and repetitive. There is a lack of more sophisticated or 'less common' lexical items that would demonstrate a higher level of control. Furthermore, the incomplete sentence at the end of the second paragraph suggests a lack of precision in word choice and sentence construction. Expanding your vocabulary to include more academic collocations would help improve this score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While many sentences are grammatically correct, there are noticeable errors, particularly the incomplete sentence at the end of the second paragraph, which significantly impacts the accuracy of the writing. There are also minor issues with phrasing, such as 'it's hence growing to help the people for learn a f'. To reach a higher band, you need to demonstrate more consistent control over complex structures and ensure that all sentences are grammatically complete and punctuated correctly. Proofreading for basic errors is essential.
