IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that the only reason for learning a foreign language is in order to travel to or work in a foreign country. Others say that these are not the only reasons why someone should learn a foreign language.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

There is a contradiction between two groups of individuals on the reason for learning a new foreign language. Some used to say that one should learn a foreign language only if they have to go to that respective country for study or job purposes, and some oppose this statement and perspective. In my personal opinion, if someone learns any foreign language, it can open multiple doors for them even if they do not travel to that respective country. There is a reason behind this thought, because a couple of weeks ago I was working in a manufacturing firm and they just bought a 3D printer from China. To install that system, the vendor sent some of his workers from China, and they did not know how to speak our native language, that is Urdu. To cater to this problem, our organization sourced a translator who knew how to speak Chinese as well as Urdu, and he charged a huge amount for this job. That's why I believe in learning as many foreign languages as you can. Besides this experience, I have witnessed many individuals earning a good living out of this profession of translator; even my uncle is holding a very reputable position in a joint organization just due to his multilingual skills. Other than translator, there are multiple job options one can have just due to having a foreign language skill. You can work in customer support call centers, where your job will be to provide guidance to the customers in the countries whose language you know about.

In the end, to summarize my topic, I would say that if one finds the opportunity to learn a new language of any country, he or she should definitely go for it, and I do not see any solid reason to oppose this argument.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While you provide a relevant personal anecdote about a translator, the discussion of the 'other side'—that language learning is only for travel or work—is quite brief and lacks depth. To reach a higher band, you should expand on why some people hold the view that language learning is exclusively for travel or work, perhaps by discussing the practical necessity of communication in foreign environments. Your own position is clear, but the supporting arguments could be more varied and analytical rather than relying heavily on personal examples.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is generally coherent, and the progression of ideas is logical. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Besides this experience' and 'In the end, to summarize', which help guide the reader. However, the paragraphing is weak; the entire body of the essay is contained within a single paragraph, which makes the structure feel dense and less professional. To improve, you should separate your ideas into distinct paragraphs: one for the first view, one for the second view, and one for your own opinion and conclusion. This would significantly improve the overall flow and readability of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'multilingual skills', 'manufacturing firm', and 'reputable position'. However, there are some instances of slightly unnatural phrasing, such as 'contradiction between two groups of individuals' (a disagreement or difference of opinion would be more precise) and 'sourced a translator' (hired or employed is more standard). The vocabulary is sufficient to communicate your ideas clearly, but it lacks the precision and variety of less common lexical items that would be required for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this level. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'Some used to say that one should learn... and some oppose this statement' (the tense usage is slightly awkward here) and 'Other than translator' (which should be 'Other than being a translator'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. To improve, focus on refining your use of articles and prepositions, and try to incorporate a wider variety of complex sentence forms, such as conditional sentences or passive voice, with greater accuracy.
