Student answer (Band 6.5)

Many people believe that seeking an international language is only necessary for work and traveling across the globe. However, according to the perspective of other people, learning a new language is not only required for a specific purpose.

One hand thinks that knowing a new language has played a crucial role in communication in the workplace. Learning a language of a particular country provides better opportunities for a job. A person could not get success and a high-paid job internationally without learning a language. For example, Germany had recently offered high-salary jobs for those individuals who know their language. The second major advantage of language is in traveling. A person can easily talk with the local people of a particular country they have visited. They can travel to the historic place and get information on their culture.

On the other hand, some argue that language has some benefits other than this. Firstly, learning a new language has helped in adjustment because one can make a strong bond with the people of a foreign country. They have had a lot of fun, been entertained, and planned a tour. Secondly, some people have a strong interest in learning a new language, considering it a skill. They have good memorizing power; for them, getting informed of a new language is just a skill and fun. Thirdly, awareness of their traditions is only possible by learning a language because every country has its own traditions.

In my opinion, language has been beneficial for communication and travelling as well as for skills and adjustment in the culture of global countries.

In conclusion, language would be important for various purposes.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat superficial. For example, the points regarding 'adjustment' and 'memorizing power' are mentioned but not fully explored or supported with concrete examples. The argument about job opportunities is better developed, but the overall depth of the essay is limited. To reach a higher band, you should aim to expand on your points with more detailed explanations or specific, illustrative examples rather than listing several brief ideas. The position is clear, but the supporting arguments need more substance to fully satisfy the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'On the other hand', which help the reader follow your argument. However, some transitions are a bit mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the sentence 'language has some benefits other than this', where 'this' refers back to a broad concept. The concluding paragraph is very brief and does not effectively summarize the main points of the essay. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a strong topic sentence would enhance the flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, allowing you to convey your meaning clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'crucial role' and 'international language', though some word choices are slightly unnatural, such as 'seeking an international language' instead of 'learning a foreign language'. There are also some minor inaccuracies in collocation, such as 'getting informed of a new language'. While these errors do not impede communication, you should focus on using more precise terminology and idiomatic expressions to improve your lexical range and precision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you attempt complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'One hand thinks that...' (which is an incorrect idiom) and 'Germany had recently offered...' (incorrect tense usage). There are also issues with article usage and subject-verb agreement throughout the text. Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear, and the grammar does not significantly impede understanding. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction and ensuring consistent tense usage, while also practicing more complex structures like conditional sentences or relative clauses.
