Student answer (Band 6.0)
There is an ongoing debate as to weather people learn foreing language for travelling or employment purposes. Some people believe that there are so many reasons why people should learn different languages. The essay will discuss both sides and provide an opinion.
Some people think that the only reason one would need to learn a foreign language is for travelling purposes wheather its for holidays or for work. This is because when travelling to different countries for a holidy and work there would be need for constant communication and clear understanding of both parties. In other words, the people believe that if its for reasons like holidays which only take less days they might not need to learn a different language its easy to use other alternatives and there is no meed to be professional. Therefore one can only need to learn the language when its really serious and professional.
However, other people are of the idea that travelling and work can not be the only reasons why people need to learn exotic languages. learning a foreign language can be used even for translation purposes, which means a person can learn a language and stay in the same country waiting for tourists so that they can translate for them and help them understand certain cultural practices. Additionally, learning a language can be used to broaden one's knowledge about certain cultures and countries as well as a way of measuring people's intellectual levels.
In conclusion, I strongly believe that people learn foreign languages for a number of reasons and not only limited to travelling or working in a foreign country.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses both views and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. The first body paragraph is repetitive and lacks specific examples to support the claim that language learning is only for professional needs. The second body paragraph introduces relevant points like translation and cultural knowledge, but these could be expanded with more depth to fully satisfy the requirements of a Band 7 response. The position is clear throughout, but the supporting arguments remain somewhat superficial, which prevents a higher score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas from the introduction to the conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Additionally', and 'In conclusion' are used to link sentences and paragraphs effectively. However, there are instances where the flow is slightly mechanical, and some referencing is a bit unclear, such as the phrase 'the people believe' in the second paragraph, which does not clearly refer back to a specific group mentioned earlier. Overall, the structure is coherent and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks sophistication. There are several spelling errors, such as 'weather' instead of 'whether' and 'foreing' instead of 'foreign'. The student uses some repetitive phrasing, such as 'travelling purposes' and 'reasons why people should learn'. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning, the lack of precision and the presence of spelling mistakes limit the score. To improve, the student should focus on using more varied synonyms and ensuring accurate spelling of key terms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are frequent grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement issues ('one can only need to learn') and punctuation errors, such as missing commas in complex sentences. The misuse of 'weather' for 'whether' and 'meed' for 'need' suggests a lack of proofreading. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. More attention to sentence construction and proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy is required.
