IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that the only reason for learning a foreign language is in order to travel to or work in a foreign country. Others say that these are not the only reasons why someone should learn a foreign language.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Language learning has become increasingly important in today’s globalized world. While some people believe that the sole purpose of learning a foreign language is to travel or secure employment abroad, others argue that there are many additional benefits. This essay will discuss both perspectives before explaining why I strongly support the latter view.

On the one hand, travelling and working overseas are undoubtedly major motivations for learning another language. People who can communicate in the local language find it easier to interact with native speakers, understand cultural norms, and deal with everyday situations such as shopping, transportation, or healthcare. Likewise, multinational companies often prefer employees who are fluent in more than one language because they can communicate effectively with international clients and colleagues. Therefore, learning a foreign language can significantly improve career prospects and make overseas travel more convenient and enjoyable.

On the other hand, limiting language learning to these purposes overlooks its wider benefits. A foreign language enables people to access different cultures, literature, films, and historical perspectives that may not be fully understood through translation. Furthermore, research has shown that learning another language enhances memory, problem-solving abilities, and critical thinking skills. In addition, it allows people to build friendships with individuals from different countries through social media, online courses, and international communities, even if they never leave their own country. For example, many students in India learn English not only to study or work abroad but also to access high-quality education, scientific research, and global business opportunities.

In my opinion, the advantages of learning a foreign language extend far beyond travel and employment. It broadens people’s horizons, promotes intercultural understanding, and contributes to both personal and professional development. In an increasingly interconnected world, multilingual individuals are better equipped to adapt to new opportunities and communicate across cultures.

In conclusion, although travelling and working abroad are important reasons for learning a foreign language, they are certainly not the only ones. The educational, cultural, cognitive, and social benefits make language learning a valuable lifelong skill for everyone.
