Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some argue that learning foreign language are mainly used to get a job overseas or for simply travelling, while others think that there are more a lot of reason to study and learn this language.

Moreover, most of the countries right now are requiring the tourist or the job applicants as well as immigrants and those who are applying student visas to learn and pass the foreign language examination. It is to test and to know what they are capable of in terms of communicating especially when they are going to work or to study overseas. The examples are Japan and Korea as they are requiring their immigrants to learn Nihongo and Hangul to grant their visas.

On the other hand, many travelers are willing to learn the language of a specific country mainly because they wanted to know more about the culture and traditions of the locals. Also, it benefits them when they are travelling to non-English speaking countries as not all people are known how to converse in English, so it is easier for them to communicate with the foreigners, to travel and again new friends as well.

In conclusion, learning foreign language can be important to society as it can be a way to land a job abroad, to gain a scholarship for students or to be nominated as immigrant overseas. Tourists may also benefit to this as it is easier for them to roam around and converse to the locals freely. Learning countries local languages are important if someone wanted to know more about the culture and day to day living activities of the foreigners.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both views mentioned in the prompt: the necessity of language for work/travel and the broader cultural benefits. However, the development is somewhat limited. While you provide examples like Japan and Korea, the discussion of the 'other' reasons (cultural understanding) is less developed and lacks specific examples. Furthermore, your own opinion is not clearly stated or maintained throughout the essay; it is only briefly alluded to in the conclusion. To improve, ensure your personal stance is clear in the introduction and consistently supported throughout the body paragraphs with more detailed reasoning.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion' to signal shifts in the argument. However, the flow within paragraphs is sometimes mechanical. For instance, the transition between the second and third sentences in the second paragraph is slightly abrupt. Additionally, some referencing is unclear, such as 'it benefits them' without a strong preceding link to the specific group of travelers. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to convey your meaning clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'immigrants', 'scholarship', and 'converse'. However, there are instances of imprecise word choice and minor errors, such as 'gain a scholarship' (usually 'obtain' or 'win') and 'benefit to this' (should be 'benefit from this'). The range of vocabulary is somewhat limited, relying on basic structures. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations and less common lexical items related to the topic of linguistics or cultural exchange.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues like 'learning foreign language are' (should be 'is') and 'not all people are known how to converse' (should be 'do not know how'). There are also minor errors with articles and prepositions, such as 'to roam around and converse to the locals' (should be 'with'). While these errors do not prevent communication, they occur frequently enough to limit the score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and article usage will significantly improve your accuracy.
