Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is believed by some people that the only reason to learn a foreign language is to travel or to work in that country. I definitely agree with this belief because it takes months of active learning to actually learn a different language so if we are not visiting a foreign country then it would make no sense to give enough time and dedication to learn that language.

There are many language proficiency tests like IELTS which people give to either study in specific abroad countries or to work in that country. People usually spends months preparing for this exam because there is enough motivation to learn a new language. Putting these kind of efforts is not practical for a person to make without any strong reason. Many people avoid learning a foreign language and rely on the internet and guides even when they are travelling to that country in a near future. German is a language learnt by many students nowadays only because they want to study in universities located in Germany due to high scholarships provided to foreign students.

However, many people learn a foreign language even if they don't want to travel or work in a foreign country because they want to watch content created originally from that country. These people feel that watching content in the original language gives a better feel and they can connect to the creators more. There are numerous examples supporting this claim. Some teenagers learn Japanese because they want to see the anime in its original form and not because they actually want to travel or work in Japan. Similarly a few youngster learn Korean for K-dramas, Spanish for Money Heist and Hindi for Indian Songs.

To conclude that, learning a foreign language requires adequate time and extensive efforts making it practically impossible for a normal person to learn that language without a strong motivation like to work or to study in that country.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal position. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. While the first view is supported by the practical necessity of language for work or study, the second view is supported by examples like anime and K-dramas, which are relevant but could be more deeply explored to show the cognitive or cultural benefits of language learning. The conclusion is slightly contradictory, as it restates the initial view while ignoring the counter-arguments previously discussed. To reach a higher band, ensure the conclusion synthesizes both perspectives rather than dismissing one entirely.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a central theme. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'However', 'Similarly', and 'To conclude that', which help guide the reader through the argument. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally repetitive. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the link between the introduction and the final conclusion could be smoother to ensure the essay feels like a cohesive whole rather than a series of separate points.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express ideas clearly. There is some attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'language proficiency' and 'dedication'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are instances of slightly unnatural phrasing, such as 'give enough time' (instead of 'invest time') and 'see the anime' (instead of 'watch anime'). To improve, the student should focus on more precise collocations and a wider variety of academic vocabulary to avoid repetitive word choices.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('people usually spends') and minor awkwardness in phrasing ('in a near future'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. The use of complex sentences is present, but the control over these structures is not always consistent. Focusing on proofreading for basic agreement and article usage would significantly enhance the accuracy of the writing.
