Student answer (Band 6.5)
In this contemporary epoch, some individuals believe that the only purpose for learning a new accent is to travel or pursue work in foreign community. Others do not think the same, they believe that there are plenty of reasons to learn a foreign accent. I am of the belief that being fluent in multiple languages can help any individual in fields other than work or travel. My contention will be further explained.
On the one hand, some individuals believe that seeking jobs in foreign countries is the only reason for learning new languages. In other words, multinational companies have some strict requirements for accepting new applicants, one of these requirements is being fluent in multiple languages. Accordingly, if job seekers want to apply for one of these companies, they should be fluent in multiple languages and have certificates that prove their linguistic fluency. For example, an article published by the BBC revealed that a large number of doctors and dentists from developing countries need to pass language exams with high scores before applying for work at prestigious hospitals overseas. Therefore, seeking jobs abroad with lucrative pay is one of the reasons for learning a second language.
On the other hand, it is believed that learning other languages is not only beneficial for job seeking and travelling, but it is also quintessential for improving communication between others worldwide. This means that knowledge of different languages is needed in order to establish relations and acquire new friends from other countries. A prime example of this is Facebook, in which different individuals from different countries and cultures need to have a common language to communicate with each other. Hence, learning foreign languages is quintessential for communication with individuals in different countries.
In conclusion, after this essay has manifested the points mentioned above, it can be reiterated that learning new languages is not only important for having a successful career, but it is also beneficial for establishing communication with others around the world. Consequently, I think that foreign languages should be taught to pupils from a young age to help them in the future.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant and supported by examples, such as the mention of medical professionals and social media platforms. However, the development is somewhat limited; the arguments could be extended further to reach a higher band. For instance, the discussion on communication could explore cultural empathy or cognitive benefits to provide more depth. The position is consistent throughout, and the conclusion effectively summarises the main points while adding a forward-looking suggestion.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organised with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between the two views is handled well using standard cohesive devices like 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand'. Referencing is generally clear, though some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The use of linking words such as 'Accordingly', 'Therefore', and 'Hence' helps maintain the flow of the argument. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion, ensuring the structure is easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task. There is an attempt to use less common items such as 'quintessential', 'lucrative', and 'contemporary epoch'. However, there is a recurring error where the student uses 'accent' instead of 'language' (e.g., 'learning a new accent'), which is a significant collocation error that impacts precision. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey meaning, the misuse of specific terms prevents a higher score. More attention to word choice and collocations would improve the overall quality of the lexical resource.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is good control over basic grammar, and the meaning is consistently clear. However, there are minor errors, such as 'communication between others' (should be 'among others') and 'in which different individuals' (referring to Facebook as a place). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher band. The use of complex structures is present, but the accuracy is not consistent enough to meet the criteria for a Band 7 or higher.
