Student answer (Band 6.0)
It is often argued that to travel to or work in a foreign country is the only reason of learning a foreign language, while others believe that there are many other reasons of someone should learn a foreign language. This essay will discuss both perspectives before explaining why I believe that, although someone does not visit or work in a foreign country, it is important to learn foreign language in order to understand their culture, customs and enhance knowledge about different countries and their traditions.
Admittedly, it is essential to learn foreign language for working and traveling there, because it allows you to explore the country properly and understand their traditions, customs and try different cuisines and know about their ingredients that you should eat or not while travelling there. Additionally, learning foreign language can assist you to get better career opportunities and allow you to better communication at workplace, and it can build a better relationship in a professional place with everyone.
Nevertheless, learning a foreign language should be only for a traveling or working there because many people who wants to know about other traditions and their customs and explore different countries, but they don't have that opportunity to travel there or work there, so learning a foreign language can help them to learn more about different countries and their traditions by online. It is easy to get knowledge about different countries and their customs through social media, watching movies and learn from different online platforms.
In conclusion, I firmly believe that, although people are not visiting or working in a foreign country, they should learn a foreign language in order to learn about different countries and their traditions and customs online, if they don't have opportunity to visit there.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses both views and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While the first body paragraph covers the benefits of language for work and travel, the second body paragraph is slightly repetitive and lacks depth regarding the cultural benefits of language learning beyond just 'online' access. The argument could be strengthened by discussing cognitive benefits or the deeper connection to literature and history. The position is consistent throughout, but the supporting arguments could be more fully extended to reach a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'Admittedly', 'Additionally', and 'Nevertheless' are used to link sentences and paragraphs. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the use of referencing is occasionally imprecise. For instance, the phrase 'learning a foreign language should be only for a traveling' in the third paragraph is confusing and contradicts the intended meaning of the paragraph. Improved control over referencing and a more varied use of cohesive devices would enhance the flow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the student to communicate their ideas clearly. There is some repetition of phrases like 'different countries and their traditions and customs'. While the student attempts to use some topic-specific vocabulary, the range is somewhat limited. There are occasional errors in word choice, such as 'better communication at workplace' (missing article) and 'only for a traveling' (incorrect preposition/article usage). To improve, the student should focus on using more precise collocations and a wider variety of synonyms to avoid repetitive phrasing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally affect the clarity of the message. Examples include 'reason of learning' (should be 'reason for'), 'someone should learn' (missing 'why'), and 'many people who wants' (subject-verb agreement error). Additionally, there are missing articles throughout the text, such as 'at workplace' and 'by online'. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. More attention to subject-verb agreement and article usage is recommended.
