Some people say that the only reason for learning a foreign language is in order to travel to or work in a foreign country. Others say that these are not the only reasons why someone should learn a foreign language.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Learning of a foreign language helps to learn about the country, it's people and their culture. However, knowledge of a language removes barriers to understand people of different countries so that it creates an impression that their language is accepted worldwide. The underlying essay would address both the views of learning a foreign language along with highlighting my opinion.

Firstly, knowledge of a foreign language helps in communicating with local people of a country we are visiting and also if we plan to work there it really becomes easy to secure a particular job and sustaining it in the long run. For example, German, Spanish and Chinese languages are taught from secondary school as it helps students who aspire for studying in Germany, Spain and China. Even it becomes easy for tourists to visit historical places in these countries and learn about them. For example, if a software engineer works for a German company and he gets an opportunity to work in Germany then it is really essential for him to learn German language, which will be helpful for him to work there.

On the other hand, some people argue that knowing a foreign language is also for learning about German people and their culture and not only for travel or work purposes. For example, if an Indian man gets married to a German lady so it will be really essential for him to know about his partner to establish a strong relationship with her. Additionally, this would help him in communicating and understanding the concerns of her family members as well.

I would summarize by giving my opinion that it is highly advantageous to learn about a foreign language for work and travel purposes mainly. Although, there are some examples of communion between people of different countries but in that situation knowing the language becomes mandatory. It shows that we give respect to that particular foreign language by learning about it and it's history.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both views and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. The first body paragraph focuses heavily on the practical benefits of language for work and travel, which is well-supported. The second paragraph, intended to cover the 'other' reasons, is slightly underdeveloped and relies on a single, narrow example of marriage. While the position is clear throughout, the essay would benefit from a broader exploration of cultural or cognitive benefits to fully satisfy the requirements of a higher band. The introduction is a bit repetitive, and the conclusion restates the opinion but could be more effectively linked to the main body points.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, each with a clear focus. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Firstly', 'On the other hand', and 'Additionally', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'The underlying essay would address...' and 'I would summarize by giving my opinion'. Referencing is generally clear, but there are instances where the flow between sentences feels slightly disjointed. The paragraphing is appropriate, and there is a clear progression of ideas from the introduction to the conclusion, though the logical links between the specific examples and the broader arguments could be tightened for better cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the student to convey their meaning clearly. There is some attempt to use topic-specific language like 'barriers', 'aspire', and 'mandatory'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are occasional errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'learning of a foreign language' (should be 'learning a foreign language') and 'communion between people' (which is contextually inaccurate). The repetition of phrases like 'it is really essential' and 'it becomes easy' suggests a lack of lexical flexibility. To reach a higher band, the student should aim for more precise and varied vocabulary to express complex ideas.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the German language', 'the history') and possessive pronouns ('it's' used instead of 'its'). Some sentences are slightly awkward, such as 'if an Indian man gets married to a German lady so it will be really essential'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, but the control over complex structures is inconsistent. The majority of sentences are understandable, but the frequency of minor errors prevents the response from reaching the 7.0 level, where a higher frequency of error-free sentences is expected.
