Student answer (Band 5.5)

Few individuals say that learning a foreign language is not the sole purpose for travelling or work in a foreign country. Some others say that these are not the only purpose to acquire a foreign language. In this essay, I will discuss both views and I will state my own opinion.

First of all, foreign languages are learned for many other purposes, it varies over person to person and learning it for travelling helps a lot. To be more precise, a foreign language really helps when travelling to understand their culture, emotions and the crucial part is not get scammed in a foreign country. For example, when I visited to Japan, I was not fluent in their language, however, I was able to interpreted with them, I learned about their cultures also I was able to understand their emotions through talking in their language. Moreover, I was able to talk with the local people and they helped me to get my directions also warned me to say aware of scammers.

Furthermore, foreign language really helps a individual to work in a foreign country. This is mainly, companies do not want to hire a worker with no language specialty over someone who has it. For instance, students who went to abroad for their higher studies, they often could not able to get a job because of language problem; they have to face these circumstances until they acquire it.

In my opinion, these are not the only purposes to learn a language. This is mainly, there are many people who learn languages for linguistic job. For instance, numerous companies who need a person to communicate on behalf of them. It would be not possible without them.

In conclusion, there are purpose to learn it for travelling and working also it has other reasons, I have mentioned in the body paragraph 3.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses both views and provides an opinion, though the development is uneven. The first two body paragraphs focus on the benefits of language for travel and work, which covers the first perspective. However, the third body paragraph, which is intended to address the 'other reasons' for learning a language, is quite brief and lacks depth. The argument regarding 'linguistic jobs' is mentioned but not fully explored or supported with a clear example. To reach a higher band, you should ensure that all parts of the prompt are given equal weight and that your arguments are extended with more detailed explanations and concrete examples.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organised into paragraphs, and there is a clear attempt to use cohesive devices such as 'First of all', 'Moreover', 'Furthermore', and 'In conclusion'. However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly unnatural. For instance, the transition in the final paragraph is a bit abrupt, and the referencing back to 'body paragraph 3' is not standard academic style. The logical progression of ideas is generally clear, but the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and better referencing to connect ideas more fluidly.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to express your ideas clearly. You use some topic-specific vocabulary like 'fluent', 'linguistic', and 'culture'. However, there are instances of awkward phrasing and word choice, such as 'interpret with them' (instead of 'communicate with them') and 'get my directions' (instead of 'find my way'). There is also some repetition of basic words like 'foreign language' and 'purposes'. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and a wider range of synonyms to avoid repetitive phrasing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with verb forms and sentence construction. Examples include 'I was able to interpreted' (should be 'interpret'), 'they often could not able to get' (should be 'were often unable to get'), and 'warned me to say aware' (should be 'stay aware'). These errors are noticeable but do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. Increasing your control over complex structures and proofreading for basic verb agreement will help improve your score.
