IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that the only reason for learning a foreign language is in order to travel to or work in a foreign country. Others say that these are not the only reasons why someone should learn a foreign language.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some people say that the only reason for learning a foreign language is in order to travel to or work in a foreign country. It is quite common and one of the main reason of studying foreign language. If a person plans to go for study or job in a particular country, then that person is always trying to learn that particular language used on that country for their own help in future. Without knowing one country's language at all, going there is a risk always. So, before going to a different country from your own country, everybody should always try to learn at least some basic part of that country and if possible do a certificate on that language as well. It will help in future to communicate with local people of that country or easy to get a job.

Others say that these are not only reasons why someone should learn a foreign language. This is also very valid point as not all people are learning a certain language to go on that particular country. Some people have own interest of learning new languages or any different reasons to learn it. There is lot of people working as a translator in their own country for various languages. So they need to learn those languages to help foreigners who are coming to our own country without knowing our language. These translators are helping those people to communicate with locals of our country.

In my opinion, learning a foreign language is in order to travel or work on that particular foreign country is not only reason. There is several other reasons as well for learning a foreign language. There is lot of people who are learning new languages for gaining knowledge or from love on that particular country and people of that country. So learning a new language is not always for going there, there is other reasons as well for learning it.

For example, I saw such an incident where one of my friend was studying the German language for planning to visit Germany to study there. Whereas there was one friend who was loved to learn the Korean language as he loved Korean persons and loved to watch K-drama as well. So both type of persons I watched in my life who were learning foreign language for different purposes.

In conclusion, I can say learning foreign language is totally dependent on individuals. It is not always only reason for going to study , travel or work there. There is always numerous reasons for learning a new foreign language and it will help people to gain more knowledge.
