IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that the only reason for learning a foreign language is in order to travel to or work in a foreign country. Others say that these are not the only reasons why someone should learn a foreign language.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
Yes i agree with both point of views, i think foreign language is much important to travel or work in a foreign country because when you travel or work in abroad, to communicate with people we have to learn their language.
In first point of view, if we learn language of a country where we are going for work the chances of our survival will increase. We can easily communicate in our daily lives.
while we see the second point of view they are also say right because there can be other reasons to learn foreign languages, for instance people having interest to learn different languages and there is also need to communicate with people in this digital world. Because without language we can not convey an exact message which we want to convey to other people even to a machine. Currently, all world is connected through internet so we can talk with other country's people over internet. Anyone who doing a business internationally, he or she can communicated in better way than a person who does not know the other country's language. In current era, most of the people are doing online businesses on many online platforms so language is much important for travel to other countries as well as for communication globally.
In my country most of the government notifications, orders and letter are in English language and in colleges and universities syllabus is also in English so we have to learn English language for better understanding and communication.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses both views and provides an opinion, but the development is uneven. While you mention that language is important for work and travel, the explanation is somewhat repetitive. The second view regarding digital communication and personal interest is introduced, but the connection to the prompt could be more explicit. The final paragraph about English in your country is a relevant example, but it feels slightly disconnected from the main argument. To improve, ensure each paragraph has a clear topic sentence and that your opinion is consistently integrated throughout the essay rather than just stated in the introduction.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organized into paragraphs, but the flow between ideas is often mechanical. You use some cohesive devices like 'In first point of view' and 'while we see the second point of view,' but these transitions are somewhat unnatural. The progression of ideas is sometimes difficult to follow because the sentences lack variety in structure and logical linking. Referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the sentence 'they are also say right,' where the subject is ambiguous. Using a wider range of linking words (e.g., 'furthermore,' 'consequently,' 'in contrast') would help improve the logical flow.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the precision and range required for a higher band. You rely on basic terms like 'important,' 'people,' and 'learn.' There are some inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'all world is connected' instead of 'the whole world' and 'anyone who doing a business' instead of 'anyone who is doing business.' To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more topic-specific vocabulary related to linguistics, globalization, and professional development, and pay closer attention to collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Common issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'they are also say right'), missing articles ('in abroad' should be 'abroad'), and awkward phrasing (e.g., 'language is much important'). While the meaning is generally understandable, the high frequency of errors in basic grammar prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. Focusing on sentence construction, verb tenses, and article usage will significantly improve your accuracy.
