Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses both views and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While the first body paragraph discusses the practical necessity of language for work and travel, the second paragraph is repetitive and lacks depth regarding the cognitive or cultural benefits of language learning. The argument is clear, but the supporting examples, such as the mention of learning French, are brief and lack the necessary elaboration to reach a higher band. To improve, you should expand on the 'why' behind your points, perhaps discussing how language learning fosters cultural empathy or improves memory, rather than simply stating it improves brain power.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organised into clear paragraphs, which is a positive feature. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or inaccurate. For example, the phrase 'on the other hand' is used to introduce a point that actually supports the second view, but the sentence structure immediately following it is confusing ('job, education or travel is the only reason...'). Furthermore, there are issues with punctuation, such as missing spaces after commas and periods, which disrupts the flow of the text. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of linking words more naturally and ensure that your punctuation is accurate to guide the reader through your arguments.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the precision and variety required for a higher band. You rely on repetitive phrasing, such as 'learn a foreign language' and 'work or travel'. There are also several word-choice errors, such as 'study aboard' (should be 'abroad') and 'ones have to move a foreign country' (should be 'if one has to move to a foreign country'). While your meaning is generally clear, the range of vocabulary is limited to basic, everyday terms. To improve, try to incorporate more topic-specific collocations and avoid repeating the same phrases throughout the essay.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede readability. Issues include subject-verb agreement ('other think', 'individuals are learning foreign language'), incorrect preposition usage, and tense inconsistencies ('i recently learning french'). The lack of proper sentence boundaries and punctuation errors, such as the run-on sentences in the introduction and conclusion, significantly affects the overall accuracy. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, ensuring subject-verb agreement, and proofreading for common errors like missing articles and incorrect verb forms.
