Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses both views and provides a personal opinion, meeting the basic requirements of the prompt. However, the development of ideas is limited. For example, the argument regarding the importance of language for 'every aspect of life' is vague and lacks specific examples or logical expansion. The essay also struggles to maintain a consistent position; the introduction states that learning a language is 'compulsory' for work or study, but the conclusion introduces the idea that 'learning different skills' is also necessary, which slightly shifts the focus. To improve, you should provide more detailed explanations and concrete examples to support your claims rather than relying on general statements.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or inaccurate. For instance, the transition 'Consequently' at the start of the conclusion does not logically follow from the previous paragraph. Additionally, some sentences are disjointed, such as 'However, it is beneficial for the students to learn the foreign language,' which appears abruptly after discussing English courses. The referencing is sometimes unclear, and the flow between ideas is often interrupted by grammatical errors, making the progression of the argument feel somewhat repetitive and lacking in sophistication.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but remains quite basic and repetitive. You frequently use simple terms like 'learn', 'study', and 'work' without demonstrating a wider range of academic vocabulary. There are also issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'further pursue their study' (should be 'pursue further studies') and 'difficulty face the students' (should be 'difficulty faced by students'). While the meaning is generally clear, the lack of precision and the reliance on a limited set of words prevent the essay from reaching a higher band score. You should aim to incorporate more topic-specific collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The essay contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede readability. There are consistent issues with subject-verb agreement, such as 'the people does not learn' and 'they does not know'. Sentence structures are often simple, and attempts at more complex sentences frequently contain errors, such as 'due to there will be no difficulty face the students'. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with some sentences missing necessary commas or having them placed incorrectly. To improve, focus on mastering basic subject-verb agreement and sentence construction before attempting more complex structures. The high frequency of these errors significantly impacts the overall quality of the writing.
