Student answer (Band 5.5)

Some people believe one reason for learning a language is in order to travel to or work in a foreign country, while some people completely disagree and say this are not the reason why someone should learn foreign language. In this essay, I am going to discuss both views and give my opinion as well.

Firstly, some people believe people only learn foreign language to study in different country or work in the country. it is true because language is one of the essential thing to survive in different country. Although translater can help student and worker, it is not fully useful in all the situation, in some culture it might be rude to use translater. Moreover, Language is must important thing for a student traveling in foreign nation for study and worker working in different country for basis survival.

On the other side, people argue that study and work are not only reason people learn language. There could be so much more reason to it like learning culture and learning to to watch tv shows, anime or drama. While majority of people learn language to study and work, but some people also lean it for watching shows and culture of a particular country.

In my point of view, most of the people learn language to travel to a particular country, but some people learn it for fun or to understand the show better. I think what ever the case is every one should learn more then one language because it will help your brain to function well.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The essay addresses both views and provides a personal opinion, meeting the basic requirements of the prompt. However, the development of ideas is limited. For instance, the argument regarding 'culture' and 'anime' is mentioned but not sufficiently expanded upon to provide a convincing counter-argument. The position is clear, but the supporting points lack depth and specific examples. To reach a higher band, you should aim to elaborate on your points with more detailed reasoning or illustrative examples rather than simply listing them. The conclusion is also quite brief and does not fully synthesize the arguments presented in the body paragraphs.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. You use basic cohesive devices like 'Firstly', 'Moreover', and 'On the other side' to signal transitions. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and the use of referencing is occasionally unclear. For example, in the second paragraph, the transition between the idea of translators and the necessity of language for survival is somewhat abrupt. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear, unified focus would enhance the logical progression of your arguments.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to express your ideas clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'foreign language', 'survival', and 'culture'. However, there is a lack of range and precision. You rely on repetitive phrasing, such as 'study and work' and 'different country', which appears multiple times. There are also minor errors in word choice, such as 'translater' (spelling: translator) and 'must important' (should be 'most important'). To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated synonyms and collocations to avoid repetition and demonstrate a wider lexical range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text that occasionally distract the reader. Common issues include missing articles (e.g., 'in different country' instead of 'in a different country'), subject-verb agreement errors (e.g., 'these are not the reason'), and pluralization mistakes (e.g., 'so much more reason'). While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are persistent. Focusing on basic grammatical accuracy, particularly with articles and plural forms, will significantly improve the quality of your writing.
