Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is often argued that foreign language is only important for travelling and working in abroad. While others believe that people can not learn a different language only for travel and work but also for other reasons. From my point of view, I think that people learn another language for so many purposes. This essay will examine both sides before explaining my opinion with relevant examples.

On the one hand, some people learn a language in order to communicate in work places or when they travel. For example, English is considered as a second language. Most of the people know this language very well. So, when people go to a second country to visit they have to communicate with locals. That is why, individuals try to use English just to talk with them. Besides, there are so many people who used to work in the international companies. For instance, to become a responsible employee they need a second language just to attend meetings and dealing with clients. So, these are the reasons why some people believe that.

On the other hand, many people use foreign language for study. In recent days, very few students are trying to move another country just for better quality education. To enroll in a different country they have to knows these countries language to understand the books and teachers lecture very well. Such as, to study in the Korea or Japan students need Korean and Japanese very well and that is why people have to learn a different language. Additionally, very few people are interested in songs, movies and series of foreign countries. For examples, marvel movies, Japanese anime, Korean drama etc.

In conclusion, although foreign languages play a vital role in international travel and global businesses, they are equally important for international education and cultural enjoyment. Therefore, I believe that people acquire new languages for personal and practical reasons.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the mention of international business, education, and cultural media. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the paragraph regarding education mentions studying in Korea or Japan but does not fully explain how language learning facilitates deeper cultural integration beyond just understanding lectures. The conclusion is clear, but the overall depth of analysis could be improved by providing more nuanced arguments rather than listing examples. The response meets all requirements of the prompt, but the supporting points remain somewhat superficial.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a distinct focus. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', 'Additionally', and 'In conclusion' are used to guide the reader through the argument. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there are instances where the flow between sentences could be smoother. For example, the transition between discussing education and then shifting to movies is abrupt. Referencing is generally clear, though the use of 'these' and 'that' occasionally lacks a precise antecedent, which slightly impacts the overall cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'acquire' and 'vital role'. However, there are noticeable errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'working in abroad' (should be 'working abroad') and 'knows these countries language' (should be 'know the language of these countries'). The repetition of basic phrases like 'very well' and 'so many' limits the range. To reach a higher band, the student should focus on more precise collocations and avoid repetitive phrasing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors that persist throughout the text. Examples include 'people can not learn a different language only for travel and work but also for other reasons' (incorrect correlative conjunction usage), 'Most of the people' (unnecessary article), and 'students need Korean and Japanese very well' (incorrect adverbial usage). Punctuation is generally functional, but the frequency of these minor errors prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. The student should focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of prepositions.
