Student answer (Band 6.5)

While some argue that the sole incentive behind learning a foreign language is visiting or finding a job in another country, others say there are other motives that run deeper. Although foreign language makes it easier to communicate in a different country and enables you to ace job interviews, I firmly believe keeping one's brain healthy also plausible reason to learn another language.

Those who adopt the two reasons view tend to only look at two facts. Learning a second language is indeed vital to be able to have an effective connection with people if you move to a new country as people to tend sympathize with those who speak their language. For instance, if you talk to a Mexican in Spanish, it is highly likely that you will have a more genuine conversation because will able to see how much effort you have put to learn the language. Furthermore, driven by the idea that the building block of any team is efficient communication through a clear language. Thus, a very decisive factor in having a successful job interview is the language proficiency. Despite the compelling arguments, this view fails to contemplate deeper than the shallow incentives of traveling to and working in a foreign country.

A more profound analysis of the matter at hand would suggest that learning another language could be initiated by a desire to keep our brain healthy for the longest period of time. Some studies concluded that learning a foreign language creates more neural connection between our brain cells which not only does it enhance our ability to retrieve information, but also keeps diseases such Alzheimer at bay. Indeed, if you look around you, those who speak at least two languages tend have prolonged cognitive which allows to be productive for most of their lives.

In conclusion, it is unnegotiable the freedom of traveling and working in foreign country that accompanies learning another language is an extremely tempting reason why would people want to acquire a new language. However, I strongly believe it is not the only reason because some people choose to do it as mental exercise.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant and generally well-developed, particularly the argument regarding cognitive health. However, the development of the first viewpoint is slightly repetitive, focusing heavily on communication without fully exploring the 'work' aspect beyond a brief mention of interviews. The conclusion effectively summarizes the position. To reach a higher band, ensure that each supporting point is fully extended with more specific examples or deeper analysis rather than relying on general statements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two viewpoints and the conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'Despite the compelling arguments', and 'In conclusion' are used to guide the reader. However, there are instances where the flow is slightly mechanical, and some referencing is unclear, such as the sentence 'driven by the idea that the building block of any team is efficient communication through a clear language', which lacks a main verb and feels disconnected from the preceding argument. Improved sentence-level cohesion would enhance the overall flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task, with some good attempts at less common items like 'profound analysis', 'cognitive', and 'incentive'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'unnegotiable' instead of 'undeniable' or 'inarguable', and 'prolonged cognitive' which is missing a noun like 'function'. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey meaning clearly, it lacks the precision and natural collocation required for a higher band score. Expanding your range of academic collocations will help improve this score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the reader. Examples include 'as people to tend sympathize' (extra 'to'), 'will able to see' (missing 'be'), and 'those who speak at least two languages tend have' (missing 'to'). Additionally, the sentence 'not only does it enhance our ability... but also keeps' contains a structural error in the 'not only... but also' construction. These errors are noticeable and occur throughout the text, though they do not prevent the reader from understanding the main points.
