Student answer (Band 6.0)

Learning a foreign language is very helpful to everyone. Some people believe that learning a foreign language is helpful for education and travel, while others believe that learning a foreign language had other benefits apart from those. This essay will discuss both views and before giving my opinion.

On the one hand, learning a foreign language has numerous benefits. First and foremost, one reason is it helps in education and travel. In terms of education, mastering a foreign language provide better job opportunities. Moreover, this can help them to pursue higher studies in abroad, where they can easily follow the rules and instructions in the class by a professor. In addition, it will help them in workplaces to interact with colleagues and also, it will be useful to give a seminar. Regarding travel, it will be more beneficial for visitors. Learning a second language will be useful to communicate with local people. Furthermore, it can guide the visitors to navigate their route easily, by following the instruction boards. For example, a person who learned German language, will be useful when he visited German, the person can be able to interact with other people. Hence, learning a foreign language will be useful for education and travel purposes.

On the other hand, beyond the practical benefits of mastering a second language, there are other social benefits too. Bilingualism provides employment to the people as a guide. For instance, acquiring a foreign will help the guides to explain their native tourists' places to a any foreign visitor. In such a way, people can get employment through this. Furthermore, people can experience foreign cultures and traditions. This would help the people to completely immerse themselves in foreign cultures rather than sticking on their own traditions. Moreover, people can get different kind of exposure, and this will be the long-lasting memory for people. Therefore, mastering a foreign language would be useful for the individuals to learn foreign cultures and traditions, as well as it generates employment.

In conclusion, although learning a foreign language will be helpful in terms of education and travel for better career growth, and interaction with local people. I strongly believe that mastering a second language will be more useful in experiencing different cultures and traditions and more significantly it generates employment to the people.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the benefits of language for education, travel, and cultural immersion. However, some points are slightly repetitive or under-developed. For example, the argument regarding 'employment' is mentioned in both the second and third paragraphs, which limits the depth of the analysis. To reach a higher band, ensure that each paragraph introduces a distinct, well-supported idea rather than overlapping concepts. The position is consistent throughout, and the conclusion effectively summarizes the main points while reiterating the writer's stance.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a specific focus. Cohesive devices such as 'First and foremost', 'Moreover', 'In addition', and 'On the other hand' are used to guide the reader through the argument. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive. For instance, the use of 'Furthermore' and 'Moreover' appears frequently, which can make the flow feel a bit rigid. Additionally, some referencing is slightly unclear, such as 'this can help them' without a clear antecedent in the previous sentence. Overall, the progression of ideas is logical and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express ideas clearly. There are attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'bilingualism', 'immerse', and 'mastering'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'pursue higher studies in abroad' (should be 'abroad' without 'in') and 'native tourists' places' (which is confusing). The range is sufficient to convey meaning, but more precise and sophisticated vocabulary would be needed for a higher band. Some phrases are slightly simplistic, such as 'different kind of exposure'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors that persist throughout the text. Examples include 'mastering a foreign language provide' (subject-verb agreement error), 'when he visited German' (should be 'Germany'), and 'explaining their native tourists' places to a any foreign visitor' (article and preposition errors). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. The punctuation is generally correct, but the control over complex structures needs more consistency.
