Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0
The response is significantly under the 250-word minimum requirement, which severely limits your ability to develop your ideas. You have introduced the topic and mentioned the two views, but you have not provided a full discussion or a clear, sustained opinion. Because the essay is only 95 words long, the task is only partially addressed. To improve, you must expand your arguments with specific examples and ensure you cover all parts of the prompt, including a clear conclusion. Currently, the lack of development prevents you from reaching a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is too short to demonstrate effective paragraphing or a logical progression of ideas. While you use a transition phrase like 'To commence with', the overall structure is underdeveloped. There is a lack of cohesive devices to link sentences and ideas effectively. To improve, focus on creating distinct paragraphs for each viewpoint and your own opinion, using a wider range of linking words such as 'furthermore', 'consequently', or 'in contrast' to guide the reader through your argument.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is quite basic and repetitive, such as the repeated use of 'foreign language' and 'foreign countries'. There is little evidence of less common lexical items or idiomatic language. To improve, try to use synonyms and more precise academic vocabulary. For example, instead of repeating 'reasons', you could use 'motivations', 'incentives', or 'justifications'. Expanding your range of vocabulary will help you express your ideas with more precision and sophistication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
There are several grammatical errors, including missing articles (e.g., 'knowing foreign language' should be 'knowing a foreign language') and punctuation issues, such as spaces before commas. The sentence structures are relatively simple, and there is a lack of complex grammatical forms. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement, correct article usage, and incorporating a variety of complex sentence structures, such as relative clauses or conditional sentences, while ensuring they remain accurate.
