Student answer (Band 6.0)

In recent years, there has been a growing debate about that the only need to learn a foreign language is for the sake of travel or work in abroad, while some people believe that there are also some more reasons to learn a foreign language. I believe that there are also many reasons to learn a foreign language but to learn for travel and work is the important of all.

On the one hand, most people believe that we learn a foreign language because it make our lives much easier because we can travel easily if we know the language of the specific country. Furthermore, we can easily communicates with other if can speak the language. For instance, my brother planned to move to Japan, so first he learn almost 6 months to learn Japanese language. Additionally, some people study foreign language he wants a job in a foreign country and without language they are not able to survive in a foreign country. If we know a foreign language we can also work as a translator in our own country. For example, most of the Chinese people needs translator so that people can understand what they are saying.

On the other hand, some people learn a foreign language because that want to make friends internationally, so that they can easily communicate with each other. For example, most people in Pakistan learn Korean language, so that they can watch K-dramas and can also enjoy BTS band music. In addition, if a person learn multiple language they can definitely improve their memory and problem solving skills also we can learn the cultures and customs of a country by learning their language. Some people also learn language as a hobby.

To conclude, I believe that learning a language is very important specially for travel and work, while some people also learn a foreign language for entertainment or as a hobby, but all of them have their own importance.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. You have identified the two opposing views and provided your own opinion in the introduction. The ideas are relevant, such as the practical benefits of language for travel/work and the personal benefits like cultural appreciation and cognitive development. However, some points are slightly under-developed; for example, the explanation of how language improves 'problem solving skills' is mentioned but not elaborated upon. To reach a higher band, ensure that every supporting point is fully explained with a clear link back to the main argument.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each view, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand,' 'Furthermore,' 'In addition,' and 'To conclude' to guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical or repetitive, and there are occasional issues with referencing, such as 'some people study foreign language he wants a job,' where the pronoun 'he' does not clearly refer back to the plural 'people.' Improving the variety and precision of your linking words will help the flow of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, allowing you to express your ideas clearly. You use topic-specific terms like 'translator,' 'internationally,' and 'customs.' However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'work in abroad' (should be 'work abroad') and 'the important of all' (should be 'the most important of all'). To improve, focus on learning common collocations and ensuring that words are used in their correct grammatical form. The vocabulary is sufficient to communicate your meaning, but lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement ('it make our lives,' 'most of the Chinese people needs') and article usage. Additionally, there are issues with sentence construction, such as 'there has been a growing debate about that the only need.' These errors are noticeable and occur throughout the text. To improve, focus on mastering basic subject-verb agreement and proofreading for small grammatical slips that can distract the reader from your otherwise clear arguments.
