Student answer (Band 6.0)

In recent years, there has been a growing debate about that the only need to learn a foreign language is for the sake of travel or work in abroad, while some people believe that there are also some more reasons to learn a foreign language. I believe that there are also many reasons to learn a foreign language but to learn for travel and work is the important of all.

On the one hand, most people believe that we learn a foreign language because it make our lives much easier also we can travel easily if we know the language of the specific country. Furthermore, we can easily communicates with other if can speak the language. For instance, my brother planned to move to Japan, so first he spend 6 months to learn Japanese language. Additionally, some people study foreign language because they want a job in a foreign country and without language they are not able to survive in a foreign country. If we know a foreign language we can also work as a translator in our own country. For example, most of the Chinese people needs translator so that people can understand what they are saying.

On the other hand, some people learn a foreign language because that want to make friends internationally, so that they can easily communicate with each other. For example, most people in Pakistan learn the Korean language, so that they can watch K-dramas and can also enjoy BTS band music. In addition, if a person learn multiple language they can definitely improve their memory and problem solving skills also we can learn the cultures and customs of a country by learning their language. Some people also learn the language as a hobby.

To conclude, I believe that learning a language is very important specially for travel and work, while some people also learn a foreign language for entertainment or as a hobby, but all of them have their own importance.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the reasons for learning a language for travel/work and other motivations. You clearly state your position in the introduction, which is a strength. However, the development of ideas is somewhat superficial. For instance, while you mention cognitive benefits like memory and problem-solving, these points are not fully explored or supported with detailed explanation. To reach a higher band, ensure that each supporting point is expanded upon with more depth rather than listing several ideas briefly. The conclusion is a bit repetitive and could better synthesize your main arguments.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. You use some cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'Furthermore', and 'In addition' to signal transitions. However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly repetitive. Additionally, there are instances where the flow between sentences is slightly disjointed, such as in the second paragraph where the transition between the brother's example and the point about translators is abrupt. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, covering topics like travel, employment, and personal development. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'work in abroad' (should be 'work abroad') and 'the important of all' (should be 'the most important of all'). You rely on fairly common vocabulary; to improve, try to incorporate more precise or academic collocations. For example, instead of 'make our lives much easier', you could use 'facilitate daily interactions'. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning, but lacks the flexibility and precision required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you attempt complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement ('it make our lives', 'my brother... spend', 'if a person learn') and article usage ('the Japanese language', 'the Korean language'). There are also issues with word order and sentence construction, such as 'there has been a growing debate about that the only need'. These errors are noticeable and occur throughout the text, although they do not generally impede communication. Focusing on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement would significantly improve your score.
