IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that the only reason for learning a foreign language is in order to travel to or work in a foreign country. Others say that these are not the only reasons why someone should learn a foreign language.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In recent years, there has been a growing debate about the idea to learn a foreign language is for the sake of travel or work abroad, while some people believe that there are also additional reasons to learn a foreign language. I believe that there are also many reasons to learn a foreign language but to learn for travel and work is the most important of all.

On the one hand, most people believe that we learn a foreign language because it makes our lives much easier, we can travel easily if we know the language of the specific country. Furthermore, we can easily communicate with others if can speak the language. For instance, my brother planned to move to Japan, so first he spent 6 months to learn the Japanese language. Additionally, some people study foreign languages because they want a job in a foreign country and without language they are not able to survive in a foreign country. If we know a foreign language we can also work as a translator in our own country. For example, most of the Chinese people need translators so that people can understand what they are saying.

On the other hand, some people learn a foreign language because they want to make friends internationally, so that they can easily communicate with each other. For example, most people in Pakistan learn the Korean language, so that they can watch K-dramas and can also enjoy BTS band music. In addition, if a person learns multiple languages they can definitely improve their memory and problem solving skills also we can learn the cultures and customs of a country by learning their language. Some people also learn the language as a hobby.

To conclude, I believe that learning a language is very important especially for travel and work, while some people also learn a foreign language for entertainment or as a hobby, but all of them have their own importance.

There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'internationally' and 'customs', but the range is somewhat limited. Some word choices are slightly imprecise, such as 'the idea to learn' instead of 'the idea that learning'. There are no significant spelling errors that impede communication, but the overall lexical range does not demonstrate the flexibility required for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures.
