Student answer (Band 6.0)

Travelling and working in abroad seems to be the main reason for learning a foreign language. Whereas some people depicts that there is also another valid reason for learning the other nations languages. Mostly I believe that travelling and working abroad are the main reasons for learning a new language.

On the one hand, It seems to be valid to accept that abroad working and travelling for study are the main purpose of studying the new languages for most of the people like me. The students and human resources thinking of studying and working abroad need to learn their language for communicating, understanding and surviving during study and work. It is the crucial part before travelling for study and work. For example, Germany has mentioned to complete their Deutsch language compulsorily for study and work in their nation. And for this, thousands of students and workers has been taking online and offline classes of Deutsch language for travelling to Germany for work and study. Thus, it shows that people study new languages in order to travel to and work in a foreign countries.

On the other hand, it is seen that some people learn a foreign language as their keen interest and hobby. Tourist guides and other Trekkers or Hikers learned new languages to communicate with the foreigners in his own country. So it can be said that learning new language does not mean necessarily for travelling or working abroad in some scenarios. It can also be for the communication with other peer groups or have fun or creation of curiosity in them. For example, Helen Keller, a renowned social activist also learned and had been familiar with 10 to 15 languages but she never thought of learning those languages for travelling or working abroad. It means that for other people, it is their curiosity, learning behavior, and their keen interest in familiarizing with new languages.

In conclusion, some people take learning a new language is for moving to another country for study or work whereas other people take it as a keen interest, hobby, learning behavior and their communication purposes.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both views and provides a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the necessity of language for migration versus personal interest. However, the development is somewhat uneven. The first body paragraph is well-supported with the example of Germany, but the second paragraph relies on a historical example (Helen Keller) that is less relevant to modern language learning contexts. While the position is consistent, the depth of analysis could be improved by exploring the societal or cognitive benefits of language learning beyond mere 'hobbies'. Overall, the task is addressed, but the support for the second perspective lacks the same level of practical detail as the first.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a distinct focus. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'Thus', which help guide the reader through the argument. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive, and there are minor issues with referencing (e.g., 'the other nations languages' is slightly awkward). The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the concluding paragraph is quite brief and merely restates the introduction without synthesizing the arguments effectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two viewpoints.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'renowned social activist' and 'familiarizing'. However, there are several instances of awkward word choice and collocation errors, such as 'abroad working' instead of 'working abroad', 'depicts' used incorrectly to mean 'argues', and 'creation of curiosity'. These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision of the argument. A wider range of topic-specific vocabulary related to linguistics or globalization would help elevate the score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'thousands of students and workers has been taking') and article usage (e.g., 'the other nations languages'). Some sentence structures are slightly clunky, such as 'some people take learning a new language is for moving'. While the meaning is always clear and the errors rarely impede communication, the frequency of these slips prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. More attention to proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy would be beneficial.
