Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is widely acknowledged that the only advantage of learning a foreign language is to visit or work in a foreign country. Coversely, others posit that it can be beneficial for other purposes too. I firmly agree with the latter opinion as learning an additional language can give leverage to professional working in their own country and can enhance their cognitive skills.

On one hand, many individuals believe that the primary reasons people should learn non-native languages is to secure emplyment opportunities as learning an additional language can open doors for immigrants looking for occupations outside their country. For instance, a substantial number of students learn german language to move to Germany for better income opportunities and to get quality education from German universities. Moreover, tourists can benefit greatly by acquiring this skill when they travel to various countries as it can help them communicate effectively with the native speakers making their trip more convenient and enjoyable.

On the other hand, critics contend that speaking a different language can provide a lot more advantages. This is because, numerous foreign companies are expanding their businesses internationally and often prioritize hiring local candidates who can speak more than one language fluently, thereby offering them better remuneration packages compared to candidates who are monolingual. Furthermore, a plet that people who learn more than one language have better problem-solving skills and an enhanced critical thinking compared to people who speak only one language.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses both views and provides a clear personal position. However, the essay is incomplete, as it ends abruptly at 'To conclude,'. This failure to provide a conclusion significantly impacts the development of the argument and the overall task completion. Furthermore, the word count is below the 250-word minimum, which is a negative factor. While the ideas presented are relevant, the lack of a concluding paragraph means the task is not fully addressed, preventing a higher score. To improve, ensure you manage your time effectively to allow for a full conclusion and meet the minimum length requirement.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay demonstrates a logical progression of ideas. Paragraphing is used to separate the two views, and cohesive devices such as 'On one hand', 'Moreover', and 'Furthermore' are employed to link ideas. However, because the essay is unfinished, the overall structure is incomplete, which disrupts the flow. The transition between the introduction and the body paragraphs is clear, but the absence of a final summary or concluding thought makes the coherence feel unresolved. To reach a higher band, ensure that all parts of the essay structure, including the conclusion, are present to provide a sense of closure.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, with some attempts at more sophisticated language such as 'widely acknowledged', 'remuneration packages', and 'cognitive skills'. However, there are spelling errors, such as 'Coversely' (Conversely), 'emplyment' (employment), and 'plet' (which appears to be a typo for 'plethora' or a similar word). These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the score. To improve, focus on proofreading for spelling accuracy and try to incorporate more precise collocations to demonstrate a wider range of vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'the primary reasons people should learn... is' (subject-verb agreement error) and 'professional working' (should be 'professionals working'). Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear throughout the text. The range of structures is sufficient to convey the intended message, but more consistent control over complex sentence forms is needed for a higher band. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and pluralization will help improve the accuracy of your writing.
