Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, which significantly impacts the development of the argument. While you attempt to address both sides of the prompt, the ideas are underdeveloped and repetitive. The introduction is confusing due to grammatical errors, and the essay lacks a clear, sustained position. Because the response is under-length and the arguments are not fully extended or supported with sufficient detail, it does not meet the criteria for a higher band. To improve, ensure you provide a clear thesis statement and develop each body paragraph with specific, well-explained examples that directly relate to the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay shows some attempt at logical organization, such as using 'On the one hand' to introduce a viewpoint. However, the progression of ideas is hindered by the lack of depth and the incomplete nature of the text. Cohesive devices are used in a somewhat mechanical or repetitive way, and there are instances where the connection between sentences is unclear. Paragraphing is present, but the overall structure is weak because the essay ends abruptly. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensure that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence followed by supporting arguments.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is generally limited and repetitive. You rely heavily on the language provided in the prompt, such as 'learning a foreign language' and 'travel to or work in a foreign country'. There is little evidence of a wider range of vocabulary or the ability to use less common lexical items with precision. Some word choices are awkward, such as 'human effects' and 'this evident are fact'. To improve, try to paraphrase the prompt using synonyms and incorporate more academic vocabulary related to education, linguistics, and career development.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains frequent grammatical errors that often impede clarity. There are issues with sentence structure, such as 'Others say that these are not the only reason why someone should learn a foreign language has become a hotly debated issue', which is a run-on sentence with faulty syntax. Subject-verb agreement and word order errors are common, for example, 'learning language a foreign'. The range of structures is limited, and the errors are frequent enough to cause difficulty for the reader. Focus on mastering basic sentence construction and proofreading for subject-verb agreement.
