Student answer (Band 6.0)

Many consider that the sole cause of why an individual would learn another language would be because he want to visit or do job in the country while others who argue belive that this is not the only major objective. In my view, adding a new language in your arsenal has enormous benefits which would be discussed in this essay.

Firstly, working abroad or travelling to a country and knowing their language greatly affects the person as he could describe his emotion and get to experience being a part of the society. For instance, as my uncle who travelled to Saudia Arabia last year without learning their language felt difficulty in day to day life while when he went to germany a year prior to that to meet his son saw how his son was able to eradicate those difficulties and become a part of the neighbourhood. This explains the importance of possessing those means of communication.

While on the contrary, learning languages improves your way of thinking and also helps you develop a new way of thinking and ideas. It greatly influences your brains ability to learn new things and improves your life as a whole. Furthurmore, it helps your ability to communicate with different individuals such as, foreigners who are visiting your country or having friends in other countries. For example, I was having difficulty in choosing my career and path for future while searching I found a person who was in the same field as me but in a different country as asked about it and as i knew there language which was "Arabic" he was not only amazed and helped me but also became a friend. This explains that other reasons also exist and are very essential.

To conlcude, I strongly think that possessing other languages has many more vital reasons because it helps oneself develop his mind and helps express his emotions and feelings.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both views and provides a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, particularly the distinction between practical needs (travel/work) and cognitive/social benefits. However, the development is somewhat uneven. The first body paragraph relies on a personal anecdote that is slightly repetitive, and the second paragraph, while covering good points about cognitive development and networking, could be more analytical. The conclusion is a bit brief and does not fully synthesize the arguments presented. To reach a higher band, ensure that each point is fully extended with more generalized reasoning rather than relying heavily on personal narrative.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Firstly', 'While on the contrary', and 'Furthermore', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical or repetitive. For example, the phrase 'This explains...' is used twice to conclude paragraphs, which limits the variety of cohesive links. Additionally, some referencing is slightly unclear, such as the sentence structure in the second paragraph regarding the uncle's experience. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences would enhance the flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, with some attempts at less common items like 'eradicate', 'arsenal', and 'objective'. However, there are several instances of imprecise word choice and minor errors, such as 'do job' instead of 'work' or 'get to experience being a part of the society'. The phrase 'adding a new language in your arsenal' is a bit informal for an academic essay. There are also spelling errors like 'belive', 'Furthurmore', and 'conlcude'. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and proofreading for spelling accuracy.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors that affect the fluency of the text. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('he want to visit'), incorrect preposition usage ('as asked about it'), and awkward phrasing ('as my uncle who travelled... felt difficulty'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma usage in complex sentences. While the errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and refining complex sentence construction will be beneficial.
