IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that the only reason for learning a foreign language is in order to travel to or work in a foreign country. Others say that these are not the only reasons why someone should learn a foreign language.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Some people believe that the only reason for learning a foreign language is to travel to or work in another country. However, others argue that there are many other reasons to learn a foreign language. In my opinion, learning another language can be useful for several purposes apart from travelling and working abroad.

It is true that knowing a foreign language is very helpful for people who travel or work in another country. When travelling, people can communicate with local residents more easily if they know their language. For example, they can ask for directions, order food and understand important information without always using translation apps. Similarly, people who want to work abroad can have better career opportunities if they can speak the local language. It can also help them communicate with colleagues and customers more effectively.

However, there are several other reasons why people should learn foreign languages. Firstly, learning a language can help people understand different cultures and traditions. When people learn another language, they often become more interested in the history and lifestyle of its speakers. This can make them more open-minded and respectful towards other cultures. Secondly, learning a foreign language can improve memory and communication skills. It can also help students access books, websites and educational materials that are not available in their own language.

In conclusion, travelling and working abroad are important reasons for learning a foreign language, but they are certainly not the only ones. I believe that learning another language can also increase cultural understanding, improve communication skills and provide useful educational opportunities.
