Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The student attempts to address both views presented in the prompt and provides a personal opinion, fulfilling the core requirements of Task 2. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and repetitive. For example, the arguments regarding work, education, and personality are mentioned but remain under-developed with simplistic supporting details like 'clothing, food, articles'. The position is stated in the introduction, but the conclusion fails to clearly restate or summarise the viewpoint effectively, reading instead as a rushed summary. While all parts of the task are touched upon, the lack of fully extended ideas and minor confusion regarding whether the prompt specifically asks about English or foreign languages in general places this response at Band 5.5.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is organized into distinct paragraphs, including an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. However, the logical progression is hindered by repetitive phrasing and awkward transitions such as 'Commencing with, fundamental reasons...' and 'Furthermore...'. Cohesive devices are sometimes used incorrectly or mechanically, such as 'This point is further bolstered by the fact that.' followed immediately by incomplete sentence fragments or punctuation errors like 'fact that. When people learn...'. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, making it difficult to follow the flow of argument between sentences. Paragraphing is present, but internal cohesion requires improvement. Overall, these issues align closely with the Band 5.0 descriptors.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The student demonstrates a minimally adequate range of vocabulary for the task, but there are frequent spelling and word choice errors. Examples include 'neccesity', 'gave' instead of 'give', 'hoe' instead of 'how', 'culure', 'enachance', 'ready skills' (likely meaning reading skills), and 'Conculsion'. While the student attempts less common lexical items like 'globalisation' and 'substantiated', these attempts are marred by inaccurate spelling and inappropriate collocations. The vocabulary is repetitive, relying heavily on basic terms like 'people', 'languages', and 'learn'. Because these errors occasionally impede the reader's understanding, a Band 5.0 is appropriate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, with frequent errors in both simple and complex sentences. There are numerous punctuation and capitalization errors, such as starting sentences incorrectly ('In the modern era, a few people assert that the english language...'). Complex sentence attempts are frequently faulty, leading to run-on sentences or fragments, such as 'When people learn hoe to speak the various languages such as, english, German, Spanish because of this they easily exchange their thoughts...' Subject-verb agreement and article usage are also inconsistent ('the work and education place', 'study in the abroad colleges'). Due to the high frequency of grammatical errors that cause difficulty for the reader, the response earns a Band 5.0.
