IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that the only reason for learning a foreign language is in order to travel to or work in a foreign country. Others say that these are not the only reasons why someone should learn a foreign language.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

All around the world, individuals have been discussing about whether the only reason behind learning a foreign language is to be able to travel or work in that certain country, However a part of population seems to disagree and states that there are other reasons as well. In accordance of such arguments, I support the group that states that learning a foreign language can be beneficial in daily life.

Many people, tend to learn a different language so when they move or visit the respective country they can easily interact and hold a conversation with locals, and learn about their culture and traditions. In terms of a job, many countries prefer someone who can speak their languauge over someone who faces a hard time in communicating. For example, if someone fails in finding a job that can provide them with good oppurtunities, they start looking for a job in other parts of the world, that not only help them grow but also promises a better future. Because of this very reason many people end up believing that there is no point in learning a new language until or unless one is visiting or planinng to work abroad.

On the other hand. the opponents of the above argument believe that, learning an another language helps in the development of brain. Learning a new language also provides different prespectives to life. Besides English speaking countries, other countries make their child learn one or two foreign languages at a young age. At that age, you are able to learn faster and being able to think in more than one language also makes an individual smarter.

In conclusion, thinking that learning a language in order to work and interact with locals of an another country is a valid argument because a major part of population does not fien over learning an entire different language if they dont have a convincing reason, but i firmly agree that there are many other reasons behind learning a new language.
