Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views—that learning a foreign language is solely for travel or work, and that there are other reasons—while also providing a clear personal opinion. Ideas are extended and supported, such as the exploration of cognitive benefits, cultural immersion, and technological limitations in translation. However, there are some minor tendencies to over-generalise or drift into slightly disconnected points, such as the mention of Barack Obama, which is factually odd in this context. Overall, the prompt requirements are fully met with relevant, developed ideas, aligning well with a Band 6.5 to 7.0 profile. We award a Band 6.5 because some arguments lack precise focus and development.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to structure ideas into distinct paragraphs examining different angles of the topic. However, cohesion is frequently faulty and mechanical. There are numerous punctuation and spacing errors throughout the text, such as missing spaces after periods (e.g., 'civilised.it', 'ideas.it'), run-on phrasing, and erratic paragraphing conventions. Cohesive devices are sometimes used awkwardly or omitted entirely, resulting in choppy transitions between sentences. Paragraphing is present, but the logical progression within paragraphs is occasionally disrupted by mechanical issues and disjointed phrasing. This performance is characteristic of Band 5.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'assimilate', 'cognitive', 'immersive', and 'profoundly'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors throughout the text, including 'humanbeings', 'commuinication', 'knowlege', 'modernday', 'oppurtunities', 'educaton', 'setor', 'ptovide', 'Incase', 'travellling', 'newlanguage', 'excact', 'Coginitive', 'pronounciation', 'Curriculam', 'pople', 'acreoss', 'facors', 'adress', and 'fullfill'. These frequent lexical and spelling errors occasionally cause difficulty for the reader and restrict the score to Band 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some ambition with conditional and relative clauses (e.g., 'When we use a regions inherent language to learn about the people...'). However, there is a high frequency of grammatical and punctuation errors, including missing articles, subject-verb agreement issues ('Various examples in History shows', 'the benefits of learning a new language is'), and severe punctuation neglect (lacking spaces after terminal punctuation and commas). While meaning is generally retrievable, the sheer density of structural slips and punctuation flaws places this response firmly in the Band 5.0 category.
