IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that the only reason for learning a foreign language is in order to travel to or work in a foreign country. Others say that these are not the only reasons why someone should learn a foreign language.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Some people believe that the main reason for learning a foreign language is to travel or work in other country. However, others argue that there are many other reasons for learning a foreign language . This essay will discuss both views and explain why I believe that learning another language has several important benefits.

To commence with one side of the discussion ,a section of society believes that travelling and working abroad are important reason to learn a foreign language. When people visit another country , they need to communicate with local people in local places such as hotels, restaurants and shops. Knowing the local language can make travelling easier and more enjoyable. similarly, people who work in a foreign country need a good communication skill to talk to their colleagues and customers. For example, a person working in Germany may need to learn German to communicate effectively at work and understand instructions.

Conversely a section of society believes that learning another language can help people understand a different culture. Language is closely connected to a country's history , traditions and lifestyle. It can be useful for education. students who know another language can read books , watch educational videos and communicate with people from different backgrounds .For instance, someone who learn Spanish may be able to able to communicate with millions of people around the world, even if they do not plan to travel to a Spanish-speaking country.

According to my perspective, I think travelling and working are useful reasons for learning a foreign language, but they are certainly not the only ones . I believe that learning language can improve communication, increase cultural understanding and provide educational opportunities. From my own experience, learning English has helped me communicate with people from different countries and understand information on internet easily.

To conclude, some people learn foreign languages mainly for travelling or working abroad, while others learn them for education, culture and communication. I believe that there are many valuable reasons to learn a foreign language besides travelling and employment.

The writer demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary to allow for some flexibility and precision, using topic-specific terms such as 'communicate effectively', 'cultural understanding', and 'educational opportunities'. There are attempts to use less common lexical items like 'interpersonal connection' and 'traditions and lifestyle'. However, there are minor lexical and mechanical errors, such as spacing and punctuation issues (e.g., missing spaces before commas and periods like 'discussion ,a section' and 'language .This') and an agreement slip ('someone who learn').
