Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is often argued that, the only reason to learn a foreign language is to travel abroad or work in foreign country. It is also reflected that, being multilingual is not only for the travel it has more advantages. However, in my opinion I believe that learning a foreign language have numerous reasons it enhances our cognitive abilities, and make us stay away from certain diseases.

On one hand, some individuals reflect that learning a foreign language is only for the purpose of work and travel. Being multilingual provide lucrative options in work. Bilingualism brings diverse career opportunities for people because there are many countries who want employees with better commination skills with different languages; therefore, an employee would be able to handle international work problems and communicate with people. For instance, I am learning English to work in the USA because there is a currency difference in my country Pakistan. Having knowledge of the country’s language where a person is traveling, will help to understand the local culture of the country and communicate better with country’s natives.

On the other hand, some people believe that there are numerous reasons to learn different languages. Firstly, being multilingual helps in personal growth and also it helps to make dissimilar cultural relationships either through online platforms or from international websites. Additionally, having knowledge about diverse languages will help people to save from disease like Alzheimer and improve cognitive abilities. Furthermore, it helps people to enhance their problem-solving skills.

In conclusion, I acknowledge that different languages help people to work in foreign countries and also help in traveling. However, in my opinion there are numerous reasons to being multilingual because it helps to enhance cognitive ability, improve communication skills, provide opportunity to make relationships across the country and make us safe from diseases.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views (learning a language solely for travel/work versus other reasons such as cognitive benefits and personal growth) and presents a clear personal opinion throughout. The ideas are relevant and supported with explanations and examples, such as mentioning the currency difference in Pakistan and career opportunities. However, some arguments, particularly regarding health benefits, are slightly generalized and could have been extended further. Overall, the task is well handled and meets the criteria for Band 6.5 to 7.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into an introduction, two body paragraphs representing different views, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'On one hand,' 'On the other hand,' and 'In conclusion' are employed to guide the reader through the text, although referencing and linking phrases occasionally feel somewhat mechanical (e.g., 'It is also reflected that'). Progression is generally clear throughout the response, earning a solid Band 6.5.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'multilingual', 'cognitive abilities', and 'diverse career opportunities'. However, there are noticeable lexical errors and awkward collocations, such as 'stay away from certain diseases' instead of 'prevent neurodegenerative conditions', and 'save from disease like Alzheimer'. Word choice is sometimes imprecise, but the meaning remains clear throughout, aligning closely with the Band 6 descriptors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors and punctuation issues, such as unnecessary commas ('It is often argued that, the only reason...'), subject-verb agreement slips ('learning a foreign language have'), and preposition errors ('relationships across the country' instead of 'across cultures'). Despite these errors, communication is rarely impeded, supporting a Band 6.0 score.
