Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on learning a foreign language and providing an opinion. The introduction outlines the two perspectives, and body paragraphs explore travel, work, and education. However, the development of ideas lacks full clarity and suffers from some vagueness. For instance, the transition to education in the third body paragraph is abrupt, starting with 'Despite all of these benefits it enrolled us with various advantages'. Furthermore, the conclusion introduces a completely new idea regarding the preservation of national language and culture, which disrupts the logical flow of the argument. While the position is discernible, the ideas are somewhat under-developed, placing this response at Band 6.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with clear paragraphing, dividing the introduction, body arguments, and conclusion adequately. However, cohesion is frequently faulty and mechanical. Sentences are often joined with repetitive or awkward transitions, such as 'Undoubtedly', 'Another significant reason', and 'Moreover'. Referencing can also be unclear, as seen in the phrase 'it enrolled us with various advantages'. Paragraphing is present, but the internal logical progression within paragraphs is occasionally disrupted by abrupt topic shifts, particularly in the final paragraph where the discussion pivots unexpectedly to traditional languages and cultural identity. These cohesive weaknesses align with a Band 6.0 performance.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The student attempts a range of vocabulary suitable for the task, including phrases like 'educational opportunities', 'international level', and 'boost our confidence'. However, there are numerous word choice errors, spelling mistakes, and awkward collocations throughout the text. Examples include 'indiviuals' for individuals, 'thier' for their, 'oppurtunities' for opportunities, 'familar' for familiar, and 'benifits' for benefits. More advanced vocabulary is attempted but misused, such as 'it enrolled us with various advantages' and 'handsome amount'. The presence of these recurrent errors, which occasionally cause strain for the reader, restricts the lexical score to Band 5.5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over sentence structure with attempts at relative clauses and participial phrases. However, the text contains frequent grammatical errors and punctuation issues that detract from overall accuracy. There are run-on sentences and comma splices, such as 'One of them is that we can easily travel to our desired place because at contemporary society everyone knows the basic foreign language.' Punctuation is generally weak, with missing commas and periods causing some sentences to blur together. While meaning is rarely completely obscured, the high frequency of grammatical slips places this response firmly at Band 5.0.
