IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that the only reason for learning a foreign language is in order to travel to or work in a foreign country. Others say that these are not the only reasons why someone should learn a foreign language.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some people believe that they learn a foreign language due to travelling or for doing work in other country while, other people argue that there are also some other reasons to learn a foreign language. I think this depends on the personal thinking and opinion of a person.

Many people in some countries wants to go to developed countries due to financial issues or unemployment in their own country. So due to this, they start learning a new language to eaisly communicate with new people. As a result, they do not have to struggle with a new language, as they are already familier with it. Some other persons learn a foreign language because of travelling to a new country. This helps them to eaisly interact with other people and make new friends.

On the other hand, many people think that there are some other reasons for which people learn a new language. This may include a habit of speaking a new language or knowing different words. Some of them also study a new language due to their passion or they may love speaking a language other than their native language.Some of them have interest in learning a new language. Their may exists other reasons also for whichthis thing happens. Some of their parents speak a different language so they want to follow them and learn a new one.

In conclusion, I would say that it is not nesessary for anyone to learn a new language for only travelling or working abroad, they also have personal interests in learning a different language.

Additionally, awkward phrasing such as 'doing work in other country' limits the precision of the language. The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating subordinating clauses like 'because of travelling to a new country' and 'as they are already familier with it'.
