IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that the only reason for learning a foreign language is in order to travel to or work in a foreign country. Others say that these are not the only reasons why someone should learn a foreign language.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
Learning new language is important. Some people argue that learning a new language is only necessary for travel and work purposes for that particular country while some people argue that there could be multiple reason to learn a new language. This essay will discuss both the views before giving my own personal opinion.
One of the reasons to learn a new language is to work and travel in a foriegn country. Many people want to add certain language in their resume for job purposes that is important in order to have a good job performance. Also, If people are travelling to a certain new country learning about their local language is of great help for smooth and convenient communication during travel. Similarly, learning a foreign language will allow people to have less scams in a foreign country. For example, i learn swedish language before travelling to sweden for my trip because i want my communication easy and hassle free also I faced no scams there because of knowing the language already.
Other reason of learning a new language is interest in knowing different languge, Many people learn the languge so that they can know more about the people and culture of that particular country. Furthermore, some people are really interested in increasing their language vocuabulary and accent so that they can get a multi language job in same country. Nowadays knowing multiple languages is a trend and plus point for personality diversity. For example my uncle who speaks Punjabi in Pakistan was so keen to learn other languages of my country, so that he can know more about every culture due to which he ended up learning Urdu, Pushto, Sindhi and Balochi.
In conclusion, learning new language is important for personality diversity however learning new language for work and travel purpose is more useful and important than learning it just out curiousity.

However, referencing and transitions are at times slightly mechanical or repetitive, and paragraph internal progression could be smoother. For instance, sentences within the second body paragraph feel somewhat disjointed. Overall, the organizational structure meets the criteria for Band 6.0.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items like 'personality diversity', 'hassle free', and 'curiousity'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors, such as 'foriegn' instead of 'foreign', 'vocuabulary' instead of 'vocabulary', and 'less scams' instead of 'fewer scams'. Despite these inaccuracies, communication is not impeded, demonstrating the characteristics of a Band 6.0 response.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as conditional and relative clauses ('If people are travelling...', '...so that they can know more...'). There are, however, several grammatical and punctuation errors throughout the text, including missing articles ('Learning new language', 'add certain language'), capitalization errors ('i learn', 'swedish'), and minor agreement issues. These errors do not impede communication, matching the description for Band 6.0.
