IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that the only reason for learning a foreign language is in order to travel to or work in a foreign country. Others say that these are not the only reasons why someone should learn a foreign language.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

There is ongoing debate over whether purpose of learning a international language is travel or job in foreign counntry or whether there are other certain reasons to study foreing langauge. This essay will examine both perspectives before presenting my own view.

To discuss the the first sight, majorly people study other language for job purposes to get haigh paid job. For example , countries in asia have low currency so experts who get some hands on experience in their own country try to go abroad to get similar job which is highly paid. In 2025, it is reported that approximately 300,000 IT developer have left their country and move somewhere at high rate which leads to better living style, while individuals who love to explore world they prefer to study the multi language which results in better understanding of different culture.

Whereas, majority also have thought that travel or employemnt are not only the reasons to understand the foriegn language instead there are students who wants to study abroad so they learn the language of their respective targeted country.Most of the countries now ccept ielts including europe IELTS is an englisg language test which must get a certain band by the students who want to get admit in foreign universities for undergrad or higher studies. Furthermore, media expert or politicians also learn multi languages to lead globally.

In my opinion, while majority of students study international languages, addressing the underlying interest for higher studies consequently get better job opportunities which further leads to better lifestyle more sustainable long-term.

Overall, the organizational structure is adequate for the task, but lacks the flexibility and smooth logical progression required for a higher band, justifying a score of 5.5.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common lexical items such as 'perspectives', 'underlying interest', and 'sustainable long-term'. However, there are frequent spelling errors ('counntry', 'foreing', 'langauge', 'haigh', 'employemnt', 'cccept', 'englisg') and awkward word choices ('multi language', 'media expert'). While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are noticeable and demonstrate limitations in word choice control and spelling accuracy, aligning well with the Band 5.5 descriptors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some attempt at varied structures such as relative clauses ('while individuals who love to explore world...'). However, grammatical accuracy is weak with frequent errors throughout the text, including missing articles ('purpose of learning', 'get similar job'), incorrect verb forms ('wants to study'), and faulty prepositional usage ('move somewhere at high rate'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly around commas. Although the meaning is generally retrievable despite the frequent errors, the high density of structural inaccuracies prevents the response from achieving a Band 6.0.
