Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The student attempts to address all parts of the prompt by discussing both the view that foreign language learning is solely for travel and work, and the counter-view that there are other reasons, before providing a personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is limited and often repetitive. Phrases like "learning new language has many advantages" and "learning foreign language means gain one skills" are under-developed and lack depth. The student's position is discernible, particularly in the introduction and conclusion, but the supporting arguments lack extension and specific elaboration. While the prompt is addressed, the execution remains at a basic level, aligning best with Band 5 where ideas are limited and partially developed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The essay is divided into four paragraphs, showing a basic attempt at structural organisation. However, the logical progression is frequently disrupted by awkward transitions and confusing sentence connections. For example, the transition "To commence with, learnigs new languages has many advantages, sometimes, it is neccesary..." creates a run-on structure that impairs flow. Cohesive devices are used, but they are often mechanical or repetitive, such as "In addition" and "Therefore." Paragraphing is present, but internal cohesion within the body paragraphs is faulty, making it difficult for the reader to follow the train of thought smoothly. These features correspond directly to the Band 5 descriptor.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is relatively basic and repetitive, with frequent attempts at less common words resulting in noticeable errors and incorrect word forms. Examples include "foriegn comapany", "Living expences", and "gain one skills". The spelling errors ("learnigs", "neccesary", "expence", "focuse") and awkward word choices ("visit and work in new country" instead of visiting and working) impede communication at times and demonstrate a limited range. Although the vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey basic concepts about language learning, the density of lexical errors places this performance firmly at Band 5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The essay displays a very limited range of grammatical structures. The majority of sentences are simple or attempt complex structures that are faulty, such as "Some individuals believes that... while other peopl says that it not only the reason" and "People can focus on only one language has numerous purpose and they wants to achieve it". There are frequent grammatical and punctuation errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ("individuals believes", "peopl says") and tense inconsistencies. These errors cause considerable difficulty for the reader and reflect the characteristics of Band 5, where frequent errors persist and complex structures are often inaccurate.
